That's a very strict format, but it's your program.

In general I would not separate checking from computing.  You just make
more work that way.  If you can't check as you go, then you might as
well just read the data into a 2D array as you check.  Then it's there
ready for the computation phase.

(1) and (2) are not separate steps.  You are going to do the number
checking as you do the name checking.

Why is this stored in an array?

I this really the right way to do it?  If you have a financial
background I will simply accept your answer, but it's not the way a
scientist would make a forecast from this sort of data.

Why are they being stored.  I must be missing something here -- what do
you do with the results of all these calculations?

It's here that I'd say this calculation is repeated for each line in the
file.
