I made a mistake. Sorry. I did not see that you actually used the
value of errno.

The handling of errno is very messy. As far as standard C goes, fopen
is not known to set errno so the article does not apply. However, on
almost all systems, fopen does set errno so you are doing it right for
those systems.

The problem here is the amount of noise that has nothing to do with what
the exercise was intended to illustrate. Remember this was one of four
exercises that were meant to be quick to write -- a few minutes each --
in order to build up the idea of parsing what you need. I hope you can
keep the focus on that.

Yes, except for one remaining use of puts.

Yes, I think that helps. Code fragments getting modified become
confusing very fast.

I've never found it to be, but then I am weird, it seems. I just find
it distracting.

Your program might be used to drive other programs. Lets say you want
to plot a file of data but with a horizontal line at the average. If
the plot program take an argument "--line-at y" to draw a line on the
graph at y, I can use your program like this:

 plot --line-at $(average data-file) data-file

where I could not do that (at least not so easily) if it adds extra text.

This fact seems to divide the world into those that think the minimal
output is obviously better and people who go blue int the face with fury
about the unhelpful output of some utility programs.

No. What do you think your program should do when presented with a file
of 200 lines all with valid numbers on them?

What's the point of ptr? ptr == buffer.

puts writes to stdout not stderr.

You are still not commenting on the fact that this function needs to be
called with index > 0. I know it's not a complicated function, but that
fact is more important than "Find the average".

Very close now.
