I'm sorry but this is very much the wrong way to look at the problem.
In my view, Richard has led you astray by providing a solution to
something that is not a problem. Now you want to extent that solution
to something that is even less of a problem.
Write the program to read the data you need. In doing so you will
automatically detect bad input because you won't find the data you
expect.
I would set a student these exercises:
1. Write a program that reads lines into a fix-size buffer (100
characters will do) and prints the average of any numbers found at the
start of a line (except for white-space). It should ignore lines that
don't start with a number. So, given
1
-2.0
xyz
7bz
it should print 2.0 ((1 - 2 + 7)/3).
2. Write another program that ignores lines that don't have just a
number on them. For the input above the 7bz line will now be ignored.
3. Write a third program that expects lines like this
3.0,2
2 ,4
1, -6.0
and prints the average of the difference between the two numbers. Any
lines that do not have the format
<spaces><number><spaces><comma><spaces><number><spaces>
(where <spaces> means zero or more white-space characters) should be
ignored.
4. Write a fourth the report the lines that don't have the correct
format.
Given that you want to use strtod, I'd also state that sscanf should not
be used (it's rather too easy with sscanf).
