It's hard for me to know how to help since I don't see the problem you
seem to be seeing. I don't see any need for character names at all, let
alone a cumbersome set of them.
If I were teaching this on a course, I would design a series of
exercises that built up to what you are doing. I'm not sure you have
time to do it that way.

The point was why specifically non-printing characters? In any program
there will lots of ways in which the input can be wrong. In this case,
it's hard to tell because the program has no function yet, but if the
purpose were to read numbers, then there would be all sorts of ways in
which the input could be wrong. Will you try to test for them all?
The right approach (for, say, numerical input) is to parse a number
using strtod and to report and error if that fails. Simple. It could
fail because there are some non-printing characters in place of digits,
but maybe because the line is empty or... well any of an infinite number
of other erroneous inputs.
