I take it that in SR they are as well "material" and "physical" ;-)
It's the interpretations that are different.

In LET they would be seen as deformations of an absolute rest state, ie 
the one in the "ether frame". Resulting in mutual observed deformations 
between any two inertial systems, as if any inertial observer were 
always himself in the ether frame (which couldn't be true); and in the 
unability to distinguish the ether frame at all (which is frustrating).

In SR they are seen as showing the way to symmetry between any pair of 
inertial frames. It's simply the nature of how matter "arranges itself" 
inertially.
(There exist actually approaches constructing SR from such mutual 
relativity axioms, whereby the constancy of light speed follows as a 
lemma, instead of being needed as a -counterintuitive- postulate).
