Michelson-Morley (I think) said that no matter where the earth is in its orbit, it is always at rest wrt the ether (if there IS an ether). So the question is, how can the earth always be at rest wrt the ether, even though the earth is constantly changing its velocity wrt the sun? I've heard the idea that any large mass "entrains" the ether, and thus is locally always at rest wrt it, but that seems like a stretch to me ... and I would think that motion wrt the ether should then be detectible on a larger distance scale, and that hasn't happened. -- https://sites.google.com/site/cadoequation/cado-reference-frame All you ever need to know about the twin "paradox".
