Never mind, it's just sale tax deduction gimmick.

Is this the same legislation that allowed John Stossel to buy
a street legal golf cart and get a tax CREDIT that paid for the whole
cost of the golf cart? He wasn't the only one, I just saw his report
where he parked it on a New York City street and interviewed people,
while thanking them for buying him a golf cart. The point was to show
how stupid government can be with your money.
There were some that bought the golf cart, the tax payers paid for it,
then the owner leased the cart to a golf course.
Everyone was happy and the taxpayers were oblivious.

One might argue that there's no foolproof way to prevent people with the
knowhow and determination to abuse a system from doing just that.

Rather like constant complaints by conservatives that because the EBT
system is abused, the whole system needs to be scrapped, regardless of
how many millions of kids are able to eat because of it. Yep, I'm sure
there are thousands of freeloaders eating lobster dinners off of it
every night for years. So what? What's your point, exactly?

The Feds dole out millions of dollars every hour to the oil industry,
Homeland Security, and to fight foreign wars I ain't never asked to be
involved in. I find it pretty difficult to summon up any outrage over
golf carts.

I feel pretty sorry for you squares, in fact. You bought the line that
the key to happiness was to work your ass off for The Man for 40 years,
rack up a bunch of debt and that somehow all the good stuff would fall
into place. But it seems all that promise delivered on was a deep-seated
resentment and a pathological urge to squabble over every last penny the
poor are "stealing" from you, and sitting around in a six-figure home
pondering the ways in which the government must be "oppressing" you.
What a hoot.

The reason for your discontent was never the government, it was always
available for study right there in the bathroom mirror. Too bad y'all
never noticed - oh well. Suck it, suckas.

Who did you psychoanalyze with your diatribe? If me, you were in the
wrong room.

Two of those three are proper functions of the federal government.

Squares/ Are you having a flashback? LOL

  You bought the line that

Again your in the wrong room.

I don't have any debt, and all the good stuff has fallen into place.
Of course it didn't really fall into place, it was a long term plan
that succeeded.

But it seems all that promise delivered on was a deep-seated
> resentment and a pathological urge to squabble

Seems you are the one spewing all the anger. Just take a few deep
breaths and calm down.

> over every last penny the

Well there is fraud that goes on, but most of it just following
the rules set up to qualify for the benefit.

> and sitting around in a six-figure home

Six figure home? There's not much left under 6 figures. I bought a
$33,000 house in 1984 and a $82,000 house in 1994, but in 2016 it would
be tough even in the LCOL area I'm in.

If you think our government is not wasteful with bad policies,
("you must be a democrat!") you just haven't been paying attention.

Is the 1984 home still valued at $33,000? Being born in the Truman
administration has its advantages, I guess.

It's a bizarre obsession. If you didn't like the way the rest of America
was steering things you should've left a long time ago - clearly the
least stressful option.

That's a bit ignorant of the history of housing prices and of
presidential history.
The answers are No and I wasn't and it could be.

It's *all* theft. It's taking from one person specifically to give to
another. That's not a function of the government, either.

Of course he has. It makes Rex happy when the government steals from
Peter to pay Paul. No skin off his nose and he gets to feel good
because Rexie is "helping" Paul (and Peter is just evil, anyway).

Cool! They're street legal, here, too (though they mostly have paths
for them). There are hundreds of them parked at the high school every
day (only need to be 14YO to drive one on the public streets).

There's a federal tax credit of up to $7500 on certain electric
vehicles, and depending on the state additional incentives/rebates. For
example if you buy or lease a new EV in Massachusetts you get a rebate
check of up to $2500, depending on the vehicle.

Clearly getting 30k back on a car with a ~35k MSRP is impossible, but
wgat is available is nothing to sniff at - my 2017 Volt is a ~37k MSRP
car, but the capitalized cost reduction due to the incentives knocks
that down well into the 20s.

With a lease around $249/mo plus a small down payment that's covered by
the state rebate (and leaves one with cash left over), factoring in what
my equivalent fuel costs would be in an ICE car of equivalent type, my
monthly use cost is less than some people's cell phone bills.

~$20-25/month was the average for my gas/electric operating costs on my
(former) 2015, for about 1k miles of combined city/highway driving. Plus
about $40 a month for the comprehensive insurance required on a lease
thru GEICO.

I got $10k back after paying for my $34k solar
roof. But that wasn't an Obama rebate, it was
from the Republican house and senate, matching
a change in the law to allow exporting U.S. oil.

Here's the info for a guy that bought a Nissan Leaf with a sticker
price of $35,445 for a total out of pocket of $16,000.

Detailed here;

Sticker Price (from the car window): $35,445
Dealer Handling Fee (aka more profit margin) added in: $600
     Assorted Discounts from Dealer: (-4500)
Hard-to-Explain Discount from Nissan Finance: (-6000)
     Federal Tax Credit: (-7500)
     Colorado State Tax Credit: (-4653)

Sorta Net Price of Car: $13,391

However, it’s not quite that good, because many of these discounts are
taken only after you pay sales tax on the full price of the car ($31,544
in this case). In my region, sales tax is about 8.26%, so I paid $2605
of tax. About $1500 more than you’d pay on a car that was really priced
at 14 grand.

So my total out-of-pocket cost with tax will be $16,000, which is
equivalent to buying a brand-new car with a list price of $14,775.

Here's your new car with a list price of $14,775. Enjoy!

(and you still have to pay ~$2.25/gal to fuel it)

Reread the post and/or article, this time slow down and try to
comprehend the point of the authors line;
"So my total out-of-pocket cost with tax will be $16,000, which is
equivalent to buying a brand-new car with a list price of $14,775."

I'm not sure about the second part of that question, but I think the
answer to the first part is "no". I've been patrolling the Chevy
dealers around here and they can't even talk to me about the Bolt yet.
Looking online I see no indication a typical consumer will be able to
buy a Bolt any time this year.
