#2521 — Mpro dumps - but where?

SubjectMpro dumps - but where?
Message-ID<6de4534952.c.n.l.f@virgin.net>
I'm using Mpro6.03, Hermes 2.56 and Netfetch 3.56.

Over the past three years, Ivan has sent many emails to me from his
e-address in .ru with no problem.

Since last November, I believe, Mpro has been destroying his recent
messages to me.

Around late November/early December this year, I began to notice in my
'Unfetched messages' list, stuff like, '=?UTF-8?B?OJ3QsNGC.....' in
the 'Sender' column and similar junk in the 'Subject' column. They
never appeared in the 'Incoming mail' list so I assumed they were junk
spam.

However, not having had email from Ivan over the festive season, I've
clicked on one of these (new) 'Unfetched message' notifications and I
now see that the rubbish ends with Ivan's email address within the
characters '<>'. But I am unable to read his messages because when I
'green tick' them, they don't appear in the 'Incoming mail' box and I
can't think of a way to forward them to a PC.

1) I guess Mpro is responding to the rubbish. Where does the rubbish
come from and how can it be avoided / supressed / stopped?
2) What can I do to open these emails?
3) Where have the previous emails gone? They don't seem to be in the
waste basket.

I seem to remember you did have an issue due to the .ru address a
while back.

Its not "junk" as such its text encoded as UTF-8 (Unicode) which
cannot be read properly by most RISC OS software, sadly its also a
means of sending Spam as well

Thats because you are mixing Messenger pro (the email client 'reader')
and the email transport - Netfetch/Hermes.

Have a look in the Netfetch/Hermes logs and they will hopefully tell
you were they were put. The green tick should have downloaded them,
subject to no spam filters you have not deleting them as spam due to
the UTF stuff in the subject or email address, etc.

see it above its not Mpro its Hermes your email transport.

> 2) What can I do to open these emails?

a) add the email address to your whitelist in NetFetch/Hermes
b) enure you are not filtering them as spam due to the UTF staff in
either NetFetch/Hermes or any other spam filter system you have.

Can't say based on the information you have been able to give us

only ###@rambler.ru addresses, never this particular address from a
different Russian ISP. (* Anyway, see below)

OK.

I can't find any help in these logs; but, then, I don't know what I
should be looking for.

>> 2) What can I do to open these emails?

> a) add the email address to your whitelist in NetFetch/Hermes

OK I've added Ivans email address (as it appears within the <>
brackets) on a new line below the list of # Instructions in
Hermes/Filters/Whitelists/Global list/Edit.
I'm guessing that at least these 3 (* see below) will open the next
time I re-launch my email software and green tick them - I'll let you
know.

* Incidentally, having cleared all the other email from my 'Unfetched
messages' list, I see that there are now only the 3 'gibberish'
messages. 2 are from Ivan's address and the other is from
'donotreply@mail.easyjet.com'!!!

You can increase the amount of detail in the logs but changing the
settings in Netfetch/Hermes.

The point is that the logs will show where the email was passed to
(delivered or deleted on a spam rule etc.).

This with only have an effect on new mail

Have you booked a flight with easyjet, etc. ? If so its another legit
email otherwise could well be spam.

Sorry for not responding earlier.
Yes, I believe the emaikl is legit.
Anyway I think the substantive issue has gone away now - Thanks for
your help.

You don't need to do both of these. A whitelist entry has precedence
over a spam filter one. If you have the address whitelisted, and a
spam filter set to trap the UTF stiff, as I have, the message from the
whitelisted address will get through.

With best wishes,

Peter.

Only if he has no other Anti-spam software in between Hermes and
Messenger Pro.

The spam filter can be cumulative - i.e. it could be tripped by some
content and not just the UTF From or subject etc.

Or in this case since it can't work out the filtering for the email by
the sounds of it, Turning off the filter of UTF stuff might help find
out what is happening to these mails.

UTF ???

Your advice re the white list seems to have done the trick and each of
the two emails from Ivan slipped into the 'Incoming Mail'. I guess the
easijet one would do as well, if I added its address to the white
list.

And no, I don't have any other non-Mpro/Hermes filter facility.

So, effectively that's another email problem solved. Thank-you.

But what I still don't understand is why, since November 2011, this
problem has just popped-up. I can accept that the gibberish preceding
his <>enclosed email address (which I assume is the cause of the
problem) is some sort of coding, but why aren't all email addresses
blessed the same?

Is your russian friend using the newly available Cyrillic domain

Ah, there you have me.

Clearly he still has the same email address but I know nothing of any
'improvements' being made by Russian isp's. I am assuming you know
something I don't. Such a change may well explain this 'new' string of
gibberish which precedes his e-address. No doubt this long string is,
in part, explained by its interpretation of Cyrillic?

Am I correct in my belief that when I see (in non-Russian Email) a
person's name preceeding their <>-wrapped e-address, it's because of
the way they have set-up their (for instance) Outlook Express? (As
opposed to anything I might have stored about them within my email
software.)
