From what I understood about it, the captain, or the navigator would predict the time of culmination of the sun, (so the local noon) and the officers would gather on the topmost deck to time it, using their sextants. They would use a stop watch or something like it to transport the observed time below decks to where the chonometers were. > >> >>>>>> In one Jules Verne novel, they measure the height of the sun at > >> >>>>>> another time, because it was cloudy, but they took two measures > >> >>>>>> at both tsides of he noon, in order to estimate the height of > >> >>>>>> the sun at tthe exact noon. > >> >>>>> > >> >>>>> Verne's expositions on science must sometimes be taken > >> >>>>> with more than one grain of salt, > >> >>>>> > >> >>>>> Jan > >> >>>>> (but don't have this one) > >> >>>>> > >> >>>>> > >> >>>> > >> >>>> Verne was not a scientist, but he asked others. I have no idea what that contraption on top of the tower might be. It wasn't there while Verne was alive, and it doesn't look functional, Jan <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_maison_de_Jules_Verne_vers_1894,_vue_extérieure.jpg>

This portable timepiece was called a “regulator”. It was set from the chronometer belowdecks, and used to measure the time of the Sun’s passage abovedecks. After three attempts at building a “chronometer”, John Harrison’s “regulator” proved so accurate, that it rendered the non-portable timepiece unnecessary -- at least on board the ship. Just set the portable timepiece from a time reference in port, and it would stay sufficiently accurate for an entire voyage.

In my usage, and I think that is fairly general, a 'regulator' is an accurate (usually pendulum) clock that is used to verify and control the rate of less accurate timepieces. John Harrison started his carreer by building one. Here it is. <https://www.watchaffinity.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/John-Harrison-Wooden-Regulator-dated-1726-©-The-John-C-Taylor-Collection-Limited-6.jpg> A 'marine chronometer' otoh is usually the thing in cardanic suspension in a hardwood box that is used for navigation at see, like for example <https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRU0u_Q1bV65ik3X4u_oo0A833agm8kJWBX6udWIBcio0JCdk1jOnqIM24-AA&s"> As for daily practice at sea: the ships chronometer could of course be carried up to the deck for reading it with the culmination of the sun. What I have read about it says that they preferred to leave it safely and undisturbed and at rest in the captains cabin, and that they used someting intermediate to transport the time to it. (a precursor ot the modern stopwatch) The confusion may have been caused by Harrison's last 'chronometer', which was also called a 'regulator', Jan

It has recently occurred to me that estimating local noon from the sun is an inherently inaccurate process. They were trying to find the maximum of the graph of (apparent height of sun) versus time. That doesn't work very well at the point where the tangent to the graph is horizontal. They would have been better off to take measurements at sunrise and sunset, and take the average. It occurred to anyone who had to do it years ago. They utilised the principle of symmetry around the peak and the sinusoidal nature of the curve. Using a series of altitude readings the peak could be inferred by a simple averaging > > They would have been better off to take measurements at sunrise and > sunset, and take the average. You do know how a sextant works? (using mirrors and a dark glass it puts the images of the sun and of the horizon together in one telescopic image) Both the max elevation and the time of it can be measured to sufficient accuracy. [1] > They would have been better off to take measurements at sunrise and > sunset, and take the average. (With a correction to account for the > distance travelled between the two measurements.) You are forgetting about atmospheric refraction, Jan [1] A hour of time equals 15 degrees of longitude, so a minute of time equals 15 minutes of longitude, so a second of time equals 15 seconds of longitude, which is a quarter of a nautical mile. (at the equator)

I've not thought about it much, but my guess is that the math is much more complex for sunrise/sunset.
