As it stands the Linux linker can skip object files that aren’t required, but not individual functions that aren’t required. Removing unnecessary functions from compiled object code _at link time_ is harder than it sounds, and in general surely impossible. The reachability information known to the compiler is gone; in fact it may never have existed in the first place, for object files that correspond to hand-written assembler or were generated directly. Hypothetically the linker could disassemble each object file to determine the reachability of each instruction. But if it encounters a computed jump or call, it would have to figure out all the possible results of the computation to work out what was reachable from that instruction. If the linker nevertheless somehow succeeds in identifying which parts of an object file are reachable and which are not, when it removes the non-reachable parts, it must rewrite any computed or relative addressing in the surviving parts. For a simple relative branch across a chunk of removed code this doesn’t sound hard but for a computed address, it’s basically not possible. (GCC’s object code doesn’t have branch offsets baked into object files, it leave a relocation record, but object code from other origins might not be so friendly.) As someone else mentioned the real-life solution to all this is LTO, where the “object” files really container the compiler’s intermediate representation, allowing optimization to operate at the whole-program level, potentially omitting not just unreachable functions but also reachable ones, if they can be inlined into all their callers. -- https://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/

Dosen't the shared library concept work against some pruning? MSDOS wasn't much of a multitasking OS, and didn't really need DLLs, but NT and everything after has one library supporting multiple jobs, not just multiple threads. /dps -- The presence of this syntax results from the fact that SQLite is really a Tcl extension that has escaped into the wild. <http://www.sqlite.org/lang_expr.html>

What is an operating system, after all, but a very large shared runtime library? As always you trade off one Good Thing for the sake of Another Good Thong And the solution you arricve at depends on te relative weight attached to the Things and their Goodness. We no longer operate and an era of restricted memory or disk - or indeed compute power. But we absolutely do operate in an era where the complexity and security of code and its ability to be maintained is a serious cost In my lifetime things have transitioned from 'how much functionality can I squeeze out of 8 registers, a 2MHz clock and 16k or RAM' to 'How can I construct an application that I myself, let alone someone else, can understand fast enough to fix the inevitable bug I missed or did not foresee?' Given the availability 0f 6 core 3 GHz processors and 32Gbyte of RAM etc/// Like the recent discussion on swap files: the partition protagonists assumptions have ceased to be valid with the advent of SSDs with zero seek times and CPU speed well exceeding the read/write bandwidth of the storage devices. Today, the acme of code design is surely comprehensibility and ease of maintenance. I think that accounts for my dislike of object orientation in that it obfuscates program logic behind idealised structures that can be made counter intuitive And perhaps hides the hardware just a little too much to be optimal. > /dps > -- WOKE is an acronym... Less code is better than more code for this (assuming the same functionality is implemented). There’s still a need to be aware of the time complexity of one’s algorithmic choices, since the amount of data the user may be interested in processing equally has gone up. That’s a couple of things that haven’t changed. > I think that accounts for my dislike of object orientation in that it > obfuscates program logic behind idealised structures that can be made > counter intuitive > > And perhaps hides the hardware just a little too much to be optimal. I think Simon Tatham comments somewhere that the right computer language paradigm is multi-paradigm. Borland C did not, the .obj files did not allow or facilitate or whatever the purge. However, it did eliminate an entire .obj if no code in it was used. I was a Mac man, initially programming in TML Pascal, then switched to Metrowerks Modula-2. Why? Because Modula-2 was Niklaus Wirth’s anointed successor to Pascal. It did modularity better for one (hence the name). You probably remember Metrowerks because they abandoned their Modula-2 compiler to create CodeWarrior, which became the IDE de rigueur for PowerPC Macintoshes when Apple made that platform shift. Eventually I realized that Modula-2 was never going to outlast Pascal. I gave in to the horde and switched to C at that point. Nowadays you have a nice range of languages available -- more than I ever imagined.

And that Niklaus Wirth was part of the committee that introduced those terms, in the course of developing an Algol 60 standard. When he subsequently developed the Pascal language, he dropped the use of "call by name". In Pascal parameters can be passed by value or by reference. People who knew him would pronounce his name as "veert", as in German, but Americans commonly called him "worth", as in "It is worth ten dollars". -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW

That's probably better than what Americans call Dijkstra. We used to have a RS6000 server that went by 'djikstra'. It was named by the same person who named his personal machine 'warfrat'. Great programmer but spelling was optional.

Don’t you think about why those taxes are being collected in the first place -- to improve the lot of citizens? So shouldn’t we look at exactly such improvements (or lack of them) to point to whether that tax collection is being of benefit to the country or not?
