Not sure if it was a single stern wheeler or not, Earlier in te book Huck's raft gets hit by a paddle steamer and he remarks that he dived deep as he wanted to leave room for a 40 ft (?) wheel to go over him. Mark Twain spend a part of his life working on them and his pseudonym comes from that time. This happens in some of the Jules Verne novels. Put a weight on the
valve. Apparently, if not actually designed for this, those valves had a
design that made overloading easy. Maybe the idea was "today the maximum
pressure will be X", because actually keeping the boiler at a certain
constant pressure is difficult.

Alas those old boilers were designed by-guess
and had no anti-corrosive measures.

I hadn't got as far as you in realising that yes, it would be someone working close to the engine who would have died, not a passenger. And a stoker is absolutely the sort of hard low skilled labour that would have been a black man's job. I had unconsciously assumed it would have been a servant of a passenger. I knew about the area from Rawling's books. I did get to visit her home at Cross Creek on one of my Florida expeditions. I first thought about the St. John River that runs through St John NB. (no 's). That would be a difficult one since you have to watch the tides to get through the Reversing Falls.

In my pre-teen years ~1960 I spent every Saturday roaming London on an all-day bus Rover ticket. I would sometimes make a special diversion to Woolwich just to ride that ferry from one side of the river to the other and back. Death, alcoholism, the dark side of slavery, real lethal feuds, rural ignorance. Superstition and religion all mixed up. Nothing quite like it in English Literature - our writers of that time were Dickens and so on documented the urban poverty, Shades of it in 'Larks Rise to Candleford' but that was 50 years later -- Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend.
