I don't remember we having any monitor. Ah, maybe... at my first school, when the teacher went out to do something, a student was appointed to take notice of who would speak aloud. Kipling's an interesting one; while I haven't made an in-depth study of
the man himself (and I certainly know some Indian folks who see him as
a cheerleader for the Empire,) there's a strong egalitarian streak in
his poetry, and a few moments in his writing that seem to hint at his
being maybe a little more skeptical of imperialism than a lot of his
peers ("Mark of the Beast" in particular gets *real* close to being an

The truth about racism and colonialism is sadly not what people who
vilify it want it to be.
The genuine affection between the English and the Indian is something
that still exists today.

He certainly was complicated. 'Kim' got me interested in Buddhism and he
treated Tibetan Buddhism well.

But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;

It must have weighed heavy on him the he was a cheerleader for WWI and
pulled strings to get his son in the Irish Guards only to have the boy
killed in action.

There is a fabulous TV documentary of his time in India, where he
abandoned the 'pukka sahibs' and went down into the town and learnt the
local languages and smoked dope with the locals and heard their stories.
As well as the regular soldiers on the camps.
He had deep respect for everyone, and if he echoed their views, that
didnt mean he held them himself.

But unless it was a separate cylinder on a motorcycle or a Radial aircraft engine I don't see how it could hit anyone. The old saw about the aircraft crash: The dying pilot requests that they take the engine internals out of his unusable body and put it all together again.

Uh, Huckleberry Finn was never on a vehicle with internal combustion. This would have been a river steamer blowing a high-pressure steam cylinder.
