The only way I can see for you to have music in iOS that is NOT in iTunes is for you to 1) sync music from iTunes to iOS device. 2) Delete the music from iTunes. Since the only way to sync music to iOS is from the iTMS (which you can restore at any time) or from iTunes, you really have to go out of your way to not have it already. And I'm not sure THAT even works, since before a backup, iTunes syncs. -- Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cosy, doesn't try it on -- Billy Connolly

The fact that this is the only way you can _see_ this happening doesn't mean it is the only way it can happen. There are a number of other ways. Regardless, it remains true that iTunes does not provide a way to backup audio media from an iPad or iPhone to a computer, which was my point.

So if you were previously also syncing music from the computer to the device, the device will end up with the same music (all the music on the computer). If you were not doing that, the device will end up in a different state than it was before, because the music, as Apple tells you, is _not_ part of the backup.

Nope. It restores the backup. Then it performs a synchronization to copy any music files that are on your computer to the device. What happens if the music on your device has never been synchronized to the computer though? Oh shit! No music!! Clearly you can't perceive this distinct and clear difference... > i've done this many, many times and the music is restored, as have > millions of others. > > now explain why choosing a backup that supposedly doesn't contain music > restores music. Easy. Because you: (a) had the music on the computer in question, and (b) followed up the backup restore with a sync If the computer had not had a copy of the music from a sync (which is NOT the same as a backup), you would not have your music on the iOS device. Period. End of story. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead. JR

What happens if > the music on your device has never been synchronized to the computer > though? Oh shit! No music!! > > Clearly you can't perceive this distinct and clear difference... many posts ago, i said that sync and backup are interwoven. in fact, you can't do one without the other unless you go out of your way to do so. it's also a distinction without a difference. the user attaches a device, clicks the sync button, everything is backed up (including music). some time later, they attach a new device and click the restore button and everything is restored. what itunes does under the hood or where it keeps the data is of no concern. users don't care if it's called sync, backup or copy, or if the data is on their hard drive, pulled from the cloud or magically synthesized. what they care about is did they get all their data back, and they do. that's what backup and restore *means*. > > i've done this many, many times and the music is restored, as have > > millions of others. > > > > now explain why choosing a backup that supposedly doesn't contain music > > restores music. > > Easy. Period. End of story. if it didn't have a copy of the music then it wasn't backed up. duh.

Again, the backup does not contain music. obviously, if the device has never been synced then there is no backup. you're desperately grasping for straws, trying to find an edge case. the user plugs in the device, clicks restore and gets their music back. that's all they care about and that's all they matters. they do not care about nitpicking over the names of each step along the way, since it's a one click restore and itunes takes care of the rest. as far as they're concerned, it's all backed up and restored. *that* is what matters. arguing over semantics only serves to confuse people.

Since, over time, I've learned some of the idiosyncrasies of how iTunes backups work, this is worthwhile even though it doesn't back up my media, and I need a separate strategy for that. And even though iTunes backs up data from my Apps in a way that seems selective and somewhat random. > you're desperately grasping for straws, trying to find an edge > case. You are the one grasping for straws. You deny both user experience and what Apple themselves tell us when you maintain that iTunes backs up everything.

You deny both user experience > and what Apple themselves tell us when you maintain that iTunes backs > up everything. i'm describing the user experience, as a typical user would see. the user plugs in ios device, clicks restore, and everything is restored from their backup. all they care about and all that matters is will their new device contain the stuff from their old device, and it will.

And I don't have trouble. I just happen to know (unlike you) that iTunes doesn't back up music. > you're using itunes in a way it was not designed to be used. why even > bother using it if you have turned off syncing *and* music > management? I've turned on "manage your own music" which is an iTunes option, so presumably it _was_ designed to be used that way. > > Since, over time, I've learned some of the idiosyncrasies of how > > iTunes backups work, this is worthwhile even though it doesn't back up > > my media, and I need a separate strategy for that. > > what idiosyncrasies? I am making it just as complicated as it needs to be to work for me.

I have too much music on my computer, and need > space on my iPad for other things. I had the same problem, but rather than using "manually manage", I configured iTunes to sync a subset of the music to my device (on the device's Music tab in iTunes, pick "Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres" instead of "Entire music library"). I mainly use a master playlist to control what will go on the iPad - I can modify it at any time while using iTunes, and the iPad will catch up next time I do a sync. I also include selected albums, artists and other playlists, and the "Purchased on <device name>" playlist, so iTunes will restore all music purchased on the device in addition to items I've picked from my iTunes library. This also solves the problem with iTunes not being able to restore the music when using manually managed mode, since iTunes has the configuration which controls what gets synced, so it knows what music to sync after a restore. The only case I can think of where "manually manage" is actually useful is if you want to be able to copy music to the device from multiple computers, as iTunes won't allow that if the device is configured for syncing music. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
