many posts ago, i said that sync and backup are interwoven. in fact,
you can't do one without the other unless you go out of your way to do
so.

it's also a distinction without a difference.

the user attaches a device, clicks the sync button, everything is
backed up (including music). some time later, they attach a new device
and click the restore button and everything is restored. 

what itunes does under the hood or where it keeps the data is of no
concern. users don't care if it's called sync, backup or copy, or if
the data is on their hard drive, pulled from the cloud or magically
synthesized. what they care about is did they get all their data back,
and they do. that's what backup and restore *means*.

nope. i click restore and let it churn for a while and when i come back
it has the music.

it also knew *which* songs to copy. obviously, it knows what's on the
device and how to put it back.

if it didn't have a copy of the music then it wasn't backed up.
