No, it's not dumb.  I have too much music on my computer, and need
space on my iPad for other things.

And I don't have trouble.  I just happen to know (unlike you) that
iTunes doesn't back up music.

I've turned on "manage your own music" which is an iTunes option, so
presumably it _was_ designed to be used that way.

Incomplete backups for one.
