That makes sense to me, and might even free up a little time to teach the 
use of sockets implement a simple client/server pair and/or the use of 
JDBC to access a simple database such as a simple schema supported by 
Derby. The concepts behind both suggestions are pretty straight forward, 
IMO rather more so than using a GUI.
