Before you can determine which of the many web "services" best meets your requirements you first need to gain a grasp of what the
various technologies are, and how they might fit into your usage scenario.

I have found this tutorial very helpful.

If you are only interested in Web Services then chapter 3 is what you want.
Although reading other chapters for background can't hurt.
