Beware of altruism. It is based on self-deception, the root of all evil.
If tempted by something that feels "altruistic", examine your motives
and root out that self-deception. Then, if you still want to do it,

First, someone may think they're making a rational economic decision, but are actually being deceived by clever advertising or packaging*. Secondly, emotions, positive and negative, come into play often. People might shop at a store where they have a crush on the cashier, regardless of the pricing. Or, people may choose to buy the wrong product to deliberately or subconsciously annoy their space. TJ Watson Sr, head of a world trade organization, said and really believed that people making money off of each other would be too busy to make war with each other. It was a reasonable assumption at the time, I suspect most or all European wars of the 1700s and 1800s were over economic issues, not emotional issues like religion or ethnicity.

Hitchens made an IMHO rather strong case as devil's advocate against Mother Theresa's canonization. His arguments and evidence were quite specific to her, as required by the context, but considering she is the canonical example of pure altruism... Still, one person can only do so much - you can't help a billion people
all by yourself. On the other hand, you can do a lot for those close to
you. That's not to say you can't do something for others around the world
("Think globally, act locally"), and there are organizations that try to
accomplish this. But mindlessly giving away money to anyone who (claims
to) need it is not necessarily that effective.

Perhaps you can *not* help a billion people directly, but indirectly you
can. Dr. Alexander Fleming helped billions of people when he discovered the
use for penicillin. Dr. Jonas Salk helped billions of people when he
perfected a form of polio vaccine. The effect of a single person can be
very far reaching. Or it could be like the Oliver Goldsmith poem about the
mad dog:
