Well, the hypothesis was raised that his "real" motive might have been that he knew he was unlikely to achieve the passing grade required to obtain the credential. In addition, if the course material contradicted the Word of God, then perhaps he would have wound up being required to act in a manner contrary to the Word of God in the type of employment to which that credential would give him access. It is true that people are not unfailingly and uniformly rational. However, rationality is still a good first approximation to the behavior of survival-oriented intelligent creatures - within the limits of their knowledge and ability. John Savard

A creature can't be completely rational - or intelligent - or survival-oriented, for that matter - if something like the "Word of God" can blind him to what's going on around him. My dual degrees were before I went to DeVry Tech and picked up my certificate in Electronics Technology and went into computers. Some places didn't want to touch a guy with the BA and put him into their tech pool. Luckily Field Service liked my other skills and work experience dealing with customers. I don't know about today's job market, but in the past, just having a four year college degree did count for something. As mentioned, some large organizations recruited college graduates and trained them. Some school districts were short on teachers and would be flexible with someone with say an English degree, even without teaching credits. On the flip side, some specific college courses or even some degrees were in essence a waste of time. This depended on the individual--some individuals had zero interest in practicing the career they were taught, others did. I think everyone took at least one college course which didn't make much sense at the time, was soon forgotten, and the material never needed ever.

Thats possible. Another 'gem' was a guy who I saw for about 2 months and he was no longer in my science and math classes at the same community college. He had decided he wanted to be a philosophy major. I asked him if he had looked up the pay scale for that ? He hadn't thought of that. I politely mentioned, 'You do know that people like Socrates don't get work anymore ?'. I also pointed out he could be a preacher or a college teacher of philosophy. Otherwise, it was going to be a bit difficult finding work. He hadn't thought about that part. -- JimP.

I took a course entitled Elementary Formal Logic myself on my
degree. I had little use for anything else out of the department.

It's true that if you go back to early modern Europe, "natural philosophy" was still recognizably science, and not philosophy. However, Aristotle and Thales of Anaximander, for example, were philosophers. Thus, I think she is correct, just using a longer timescale than the one you're thinking of. John Savard

The first universities divided human knowledge into "philosophy", which dealt with reason, and "theology", which dealt with faith. That is why they're still the only two types of _academic_ doctorates. As "natural philosophy" (the branch of philosophy that dealt with the natural world) grew, it used reason to develop "science", and turned from theory to evidence and applications; to signify this, the name changed to "natural science". I can't recall when/how the humanities split off, but I assume it was similar. Modern philosophy is what little remains: the study of reason itself rather than the application of reason (mostly via science). Theology didn't grow anywhere near much, which is to be expected for a field that depends on divine intervention to advance, but it did spawn the field of "divinity" as the application of theology. The people who worked on breaking the German codes in WWII... were crossword puzzle experts, chess masters, mathematicians, and people from more exotic fields... because "out of the box" solutions were sought.
