The only thing I ever saw about this subject shows about five reeds, like tuning forks, and one of the reeds was labeled 60 cps.

There are several instruments involved in connecting a large power station to the grid. First you inspect the reeds; around 12-15 of them with frequencies from ca 49.2 to 50.8 volts. You inspect it VERY closely to see that you ONLY see movement in the 50Hz one. Then you inspect the phase plots (usually on oscilloscopes), both the standalone one and the difference one from the grid. You should see an exact sine on the standlone one, and eventually a flat line on the difference one. If not getting flat you need to vary the frequency very slightly. When the line is flat and you are at exactly 50 Hz you throw the Big Switch. And follow the phase plot intensely while you revv up the engine (which suddenly got a few hundred megawatts of load, and will tend to lag a bit). You also get help from the difference plots, which should be flat (but rarely are). Hydropower stations tend to have a minimum effect of ~15% of their rated maximum, so you don't want to run them on idle for too long. Ramp-up from standstill to 100MW on a 120MW plant takes around 3 minutes, and most of this period is to get the water moving. This is why the mix of wind, solar and hydro is so good, because the hydro ones can ramp up and down; but only has limited "fuel" in the dams; so every contribution with wind and solar helps extend the fuel supply. The grid in NO is pretty standalone, and generates 36GW if everything is running flat out (it never is). The highest loads has been just shy of 29GW. The average is around 16GW. Export/import lines are around 8GW, where using more than around 6 is pretty impractical. Around here they tend to do the final load factor corrections at the generators, and only have simple condensor units at the substations. Another advantage of having a rather small, well-contained country. -- mrr

Isn't that true of the workers who make most of the consumer goods we buy? Apple and the dollar store have that in common. Haven't they automated crystal calibration by now? I'd have thought the days of polishing the crystal/rubbing pencil lead on it died out 50 years ago.

Me too. A friend was recently complaining about the short power cuts
we've been getting recently, as she has to go around resetting all the
clocks on ovens, microwaves etc. I said we didn't set the clocks on
those, since it was the device we wanted rather than the clock, and she
was shocked. "If you have a clock, why wouldn't you set it?"

Our Neff oven and Panasonic microwave oven won't work at all unless you set
their clocks.

When the electricity turned back on, the clock would still have the right time. Why oh why would the makers of stoves and microwaves *not* design in back-up batteries???
