I was running Windows Home 23H2, and Epson Perfection V600 Photo (scanner). The drivers were installed from the supplied CD. All worked great. I had to reset Windows 11 Home, which installed 24H2. I installed the V600 drivers again from the supplied CD, but whenever I try to launch the scanner software, I get "Cannot communicate with the scanner. Make sure the scanner is on, correctly setup, and connected with no errors indicated." I've searched for solutions, but can't find any. I prefer to use the Epson software, rather than a third party. Any ideas?

The Epson FAQ has some pictures of tools you have installed.
EPSON Scan > EPSON Scan Settings
The setting could be there, assuming the software hasn't been changed.

I have one of those pretty good scanners, but am using it with Windows 7. The fault you mention seems to be fairly common under any OS, not just the latest Win11, so I'm surprised you haven't mentioned encountering it before. I append below the procedure that nearly always works for me, but, in your case, I suspect that: :-( One of the services used has been disabled. Ensure that the following services are (re)started in the order listed: Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service Epson Scanner Service :-( More worryingly, note the ... 'wiawow64.exe - Thunking WIA APIS from 32 to 64 Process ... in the procedure appended. Isn't there something about Win 11 not supporting 32-Bit software? Appendix ======== How to regain contact with an Epson V600 scanner: * Switch off the scanner, the low voltage power button on the side is sufficient, you don't have to switch it off at the mains. * Go into Task Manager and kill ... wiawow64.exe - Thunking WIA APIS from 32 to 64 Process ... and any other Epson scan stuff that may be there, which probably depends on exactly how and what was happening when contact with the scanner was lost. * Go into Computer Management, Services and Applications, Services and stop the Epson Scanner Service, if it wasn't stopped in the previous step. * Restart the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service. * Start the Epson Scanner Service. * Switch on the scanner, wait for it to complete its startup sequence and some few seconds more, and then try again. -- Fake news kills! It is the OS installation media that is 64-bit, uses a 64-bit processor, and has a large memory address space. There does not see to be a 32-bit DVD for Windows 11. The last 32-bit DVD would be Win10 22H2. You can run 32-bit software or 64-bit software, via the SYSWOW (Windows on Windows) subsystem the OS has. The terminology you are using (64-bit OS, 64-bit only software) is a "Pure 64" or "True 64" environment. I think even the processor can be thrown into some mode like that, such that 32-bit instructions are removed entirely. I've not heard Windows advancing to that state. There might be one Linux that is like that, but Linux has multilib support, which might share some characteristics with SYSWOW. You might check your multilib support on Linux, when expecting wine64 and wine32 to work. Some distros don't seem to have that turned on, and then when you're doing your WINE install, it's one additional thing to check or worry about. Paul

I have the V600 installed on a Windows 7, a Windows 10, and this Windows 11 machine. I've never experienced this fault before. I append below the procedure that nearly always > works for me, but, in your case, I suspect that: > > :-( One of the services used has been disabled. Ensure that the > following services are (re)started in the order listed: > Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service > Epson Scanner Service Windows Image Acquisition Service Status was "Running", Startup Type was "Automatic (Trigger Start)", and Log on As was "Local Service". But, when I clicked on Properties, it allowed me to do a Restart. Epson Scanner Service Status was "Running", Startup Type was "Automatic", and Log on As was "Local Service". When I clicked on Properties, it would not allow a Restart. Guess I could have Stopped and Started since I was already in the Services panel, but I wanted to see if WIA was the issue. Well, just Restarting WIA didn't solve things, so I Stopped Epson Scanner Service, and Started it. It's been about eight hours since Restarting and Starting both services, and this Windows 11 machine has 'slept', 'restarted', and 'cold booted', and I've turned the V600 scanner off and on at different times. Both the button on the scanner itself and the desktop scanner icon start the scanning process every time. Luckily, (so far) it hasn't been more complicated of a fix. Thanks for the ideas. > > :-( More worryingly, note the ... > 'wiawow64.exe - Thunking WIA APIS from 32 to 64 Process > ... in the procedure appended. As Java Jive mentions, this is quite a common problem, so it's strange that you've not encountered it before. Anyway, I have an Epson Perfection V30 scanner and encounter the problem with the EPSON Scan software if I'm not doing things the right way. Recently, after the 24H2 update, I've scanned some 40-50 pages, so I know it still *can* work correctly in 24H2. What to do if you encounter the "Cannot communicate with the scanner ... " error: Exit from the 'EPSON Scan' program, turn the power of the scanner off, turn it back on and only *then* restart the 'EPSON Scan' program. So scanner must be on *before* you start the 'EPSON Scan' program. If not, you have to perform the above procedure. I've also experienced that I get the error if the computer (I have a laptop) goes to sleep while the 'EPSON Scan' program was still running. I think the laptop will remove power from the USB-port during sleep and when the laptop resumes, the USB-port is in a wrong state (still unpowered?) and hence the 'EPSON Scan' program gives the error. There is a Device Manager setting to keep the USB-port powered during sleep, but it is a bit hard to determine which port on which USB hub is the one being used for the scanner. The UsbTreeView program mentioned by Paul can help you with that. (Basically UsbTreeView gives you the Hub number and Port number on that hub, which is used for the scanner and then you can look up that Port_#00PP.Hub_#00HH number on the 'General' tab of the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' tree in Device Manager. The power setting is on the 'Power Management' tab.) Hope this helps.

Or just view Device Manager choosing View, Devices by connection? -- Fake news kills! I may be contacted via the contact address given on my website: www.macfh.co.uk

Yes, but you have to 'open' all the device trees or know which ones to
open. I don't see a way to expand all the collapsed trees. And even if
you can expand them, it will be hard to see the forest for the trees
(pun intended).
I don't want to drag out my scanner to try, but I have an USB
memory-stick in the same physical port to which I normally connect the
scanner and View -> Devices by connection just shows the stick but the
Properties tabs give no Port/Hub numbers.
In my test, I have to open:
- ACPI x64-based PC
- Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
- PCI Express Root Complex
- PCI Express Root Port (the *right* one of four!)
- AMD USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft)
- USB Root Hub (Usb 3.0) (the *right* one of two!)
And then I finally see
"USB Mass Storage Device"
and if I open that tree, I will see
"Samsung Flash Drive FIT USB Device"
and can open the 'Power Management' tab of the parent
"USB Mass Storage Device"
OTOH, the USB memory-stick is in the category 'Portable Devices' so
perhaps my test is not valid for a scanner.

Installed Epson software and was seeing the unable to connect to the scanner error message. It took a while but I finally found out that somehow there was an APP on my PC that called "Windows Scan". After I told the system to remove the APP and a reboot and my scanner started working again just like it did before reinstalling Windows 11. I don't know how the offending APP got installed after the fresh install but if you find it on your machine consider removing it if you have scanner problems.

I see that's available at the Microsoft store. I don't have it.
