Basic computer questions (1) Is there a "shutdown" or "reboot" keyboard sequence? (2) How does Windows know which graphics output to use? (3) How do you lubricate a sticking graphics card fan? The situation is that the old desktop graphics card fan seems to get stuck and the way I have been finding that out is the monitor blanks out. I removed the case side and that's when I noticed the fan is getting stuck but I can't reboot the computer without being able to see the monitor. The graphics card bottom board underside of the fan is hot to the touch and the fan isn't running (it seems to need lubrication as I already cleaned out all the dust everywhere with those air spray cans). It still happens. The monitor stays shut down even after I give the graphics card fan a push to make it spin again and after a while the graphics card board becomes only slightly warm to the touch. But the monitor never comes back on until the computer is rebooted. Then it acts like nothing happened. I would like a keyboard reboot sequence because I can't see anything on the monitor to click the mouse to reboot the computer so all I can do is not very gracefully kill the power to the computer which I'd rather not do. Turning the monitor on and off or wiggling cables and removing them and attaching another monitor or even switching the cables from the graphics card to the motherboard graphics output doesn't change that the graphics card seems to have shut down all monitor output until the next reboot. MSI Afterburner tells the graphics card is an NVidia "GeForce 210 on GT218 GPU" Why doesn't switching the monitor cable from the graphics card output to the motherboard output not work? How does the computer know which output to use at any given time? Should I put a few drops of sewing machine oil into the fan spindle? (if I can get the fan housing off the graphics card that is) Is there a magic keyboard sequence that will reboot a PC that is running but whose display is blind?

I am no expert, but if it's really a 210, then one case fan will probably suffice. Probably best to consider the fans that were originally on it. Based on the limited experience that I do have, I would say that dust is the culprit. If you truly cleaned it all out, I'm surprised it didn't help. I have had my own pwm fans get persnickety with age-and I ended up solving the problems I was having by having them run all the time. Good luck!

Alternatively, you can configure the power button to shut it down gracefully, this is what I did on my headless server.

Please check in the device manager if the GeForce and the IGP are listed in the graphic cards section. Maybe you need to switch the IGP on in the BIOS. Also make sure the driver for the IGP is installed. Please provide the model number of the motherboard and the CPU.

Your first priority is fixing that.
You're going to ruin the card if you keep running it that way.
There are some frameless fans as replacement. You have to
check the dimensions and voltage carefully. Unfortunately,
these come from China, and while it might say "4 days" or
"6 days", we know it'll be 30 days plus.
https://www.newegg.ca/p/1YF-01FX-00A35
https://www.newegg.com/p/2RC-0CX0-00019
The video card market has been skewed for
long enough, that other options aren't very
attractive at all. It looks like Arctic Cooling
is half out of business. Changing out the whole cooler
doesn't look all that attractive.
The 210 may have a DVI-I, HDMI, VGA on it. A
replacement GT730 might be DVI-D, HDMI, VGA, which
means only one VGA output by default. Then you have
to buy an HDMI to VGA adapter, which costs more
money, if you want a second VGA. While the 210
is not a powerful card, it has a certain set of
outputs that are hard to match "exactly" with a more modern card.
For example, in my junk room, I have a pile of
HDMI to VGA and DP to VGA adapters. And that's because
my two prestigious monitors are VGA only.
*******
In Control Panels : Power Options , on the top right,
you can find
"Choose what the power button does"
If you have Hibernate set up on the PC, you can
probably find Hibernate as an option for the Power
Button.
Then, if the screen turns black, you would press the
front power button, and after the drive light has been on
for 30 seconds or less, your (black screen) session
will be written to disk. This would normally require
pressing and holding the switch for four seconds, so
the instruction to do something registers. The switch
is set to ignore short presses, from things like your cat.
The next time you turn the PC on again, the hiberfile
will be read, and your session restored from disk.
That's a lot better than any keyboard shortcut.

That's why I asked for advice in oiling the fan spindle. :->

The year 2009 motherboard ATI Radeon HD 4200 has a white DVI & blue VGA.
The Nvidia GeForce 210 has white DVI & blue VGA & HDMI. I'm using the HDMI.

It's an old desktop. If the graphics card died, I'd just drop down to the
motherboard graphics as I don't worse graphics but watch YouTube videos.
The problem really is just the fan needs lubrication.

Because of linux dual boot, I have all the hiberstuff turned off.
Plus it often doesn't recover from sleep so I have that turned off too.
I don't want to sleep. I don't want to hibernate. I want to reboot.
So far nobody knows of any reboot key sequence unfortunately.
> That's a lot better than any keyboard shortcut.
Not really. It's like me asking how to get to Austin Texas and the only
thing the computer can do is take me to Reno Nevada instead.
Sure, Reno is nicer than Austin, but that's not what I want.
The three questions I asked were
(1) Is there a "shutdown" or "reboot" keyboard sequence?
Unfortunately it's looking like the answer is no.
(2) How does the motherboard know which graphics output to use?
Unfortunately it seems to depend on the motherboard & BIOS.
https://motherboardsguru.com/can-you-use-motherboard-hdmi-with-graphics-card/
(3) How do you lubricate a sticking graphics card fan?
Unfortunately the manual doesn't say how to lubricate the fan.
https://www.manua.ls/gigabyte/nvidia-geforce-210/manual
This is a video for the GeForce 210 but it doesn't even have a fan.
https://youtu.be/Yckv00CsaJo
This is what the fan looks like. It's surrounded by heat sink fins.
https://compu-cel.com/product/video-cards/nvidia-geforce-210-1gb/
There is no 'cover' like you see on a lot of pictures on the net.
Probably those four plastic posts, one in each corner, can come out?
There is a dimple in the fan in the center but it's not an oil recess.
Maybe I can just pull the fan straight up and off?
Somehow I have to get the fan off to lubricate the spindle.

You need to replace the fan.
Peeling the label off the fan to oil it, only used
to work on some older fans (probably ball bearing ones).
You have the option, on low power cards, of
replacing the heatsink-fan assembly with a
heatsink, plus an external case fan for air
movement. On a 300W card, that's not going to
work, and an Arctic Cooling aftermarket cooler
may be required to replaced worn-out stuff.
And Arctic Cooling may have stepped away from
the vid-card market, due to declining sales.
*******
Some integrated graphics, they are disabled
when you plug in a PCIe video card. Other
motherboards, allow both to run in parallel.
If you cannot seem to "raise" the onboard graphics,
they may appear again when the PCIe card is removed
from its socket. Always remove all power from
the PC when adding or removing cards (so no
standby voltages are hot).
In punter-land, the fastest way to fix a card
is to replace it. This one is $70 at the moment.

Every bit of advice you gave was on the mark! I removed the graphics card and tried to remove the heat sink four plastic posts but got scared I was going to break something. They take a lot of force to just budge a millimeter and then I think you need all four at once but I was afraid I was going to crack the graphics card in half doing that. I also tried to remove the three steel screws underneath the fan blades but I started stripping them so I got scared again and just put a few drops of oil inside with the card upside down. I don't know if they did anything though based on people saying the bearings are likely sealed. I then rebooted the desktop without the graphics card and MSI Afterburner saw the 196MHz ATI Radeon 4200 but when I put the graphics card back and rebooted MSI Afterburner shows 520 MHz on the Nvidia GeForce 210. I brought the desktop from the floor to the desktop so that I could keep an eye on why the fan isn't turning when it should be turning. Unfortunately the fan control buttons don't work with MSI Afterburner on that card.

It is possible to detect a monitor that is connected to a VGA/DVI/DP/HDMI port. This port will be switched on. Regarding the IGP on the motherboard/CPU: Most current MoBos support using the IGP at the same time as a dedicated GPU, but some older ones (e.g. socket 775 and older) does not support this, the IGP will be turned off if a dedicated GPU is installed. > Should I put a few drops of sewing machine oil into the fan spindle? > (if I can get the fan housing off the graphics card that is) This will help, I also did that with a Albatron GeForce 5700. You maybe need to remove the sticker from the fan to reach the bearing. Make sure the fan properly works, if the GPU gets too hot it will at least crash the system and maybe completely destroy the GPU. > Is there a magic keyboard sequence that will reboot a PC that is > running out whose display is blind? I don't know one for Windows, but for Linux.

If you have a "$16 GPU", and it's giving you trouble, maybe just replace the whole thing and avoid the likely possibility that a drop of machine oil won't fix the problem. Or, as I suggested earlier, "jury-rig" a case fan to the GPU (after removing the current fan).

Can you kindly start reading what I'm asking before offering advice?
:->
It's like I asked you how to walk to the local grocery store to get milk
and you tell me you prefer to fly an airplane to Paris for a French meal.
If you don't know the answer to the three questions, that's OK.
But please stop berating me because YOU don't like the questions I asked.
The three related technical questions I asked were
(1) Is there a Windows "shutdown" or "reboot" keyboard sequence?
Unfortunately it's looking like the answer is emphatically no.
(2) How does the motherboard know which graphics output to use?
It seems to depend on the motherboard & BIOS but mine are old are 2009.
https://motherboardsguru.com/can-you-use-motherboard-hdmi-with-graphics-card/
(3) How do you lubricate a sticking graphics card fan?
Unfortunately the manual doesn't say how to lubricate the fan
https://www.manua.ls/gigabyte/nvidia-geforce-210/manual
but I think I might be able to remove the fan manually & lube it
because it has four plastic posts and three steel screws.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/115338604625?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28
I'd appreciate it if your response is related to those three questions.

The seemed related to me in that his graphics card fan slows down due to lack of lubrication and then the screen goes blank and he would like to change the graphics output to the motherboard and reboot the computer so that change would take affect (or have the change switch automatically).

Yes, that's what I said. You can relate them if you try hard enough! ; ) nuf said.

If there is a working integrated graphics, I'd just unplug the
fan-deficient card until it was fixed. And use the integrated graphics
full time.
Depending on the heatsink-fan design, you butter it up with thermal
paste and lay it, fan side down, on the table. There can be four holes
in the graphics card. You lay the graphics card onto the buttered heatsink,
being careful to align the four holes in the PCB with the equivalent points
in the heatsink. You can use a pair of diagonal holes as "alignment" info,
while screwing in the screws for the other diagonal. This keeps things
aligned long enough, to fasten the items together. The second two
screws will be easier to fit. On a typical cheesy video card like the
one I re-pasted, the screws have springs and the springs control the
assembly tension. So it cannot be over-torqued.
If you don't use the holes for alignment, there is a tendency to
"push the PCB all over the place, smear thermal paste all over, make big mess".
That's part of the learning process.

Yes, you need to unscrew the fan from the black aluminum cooler. Then you can remove the sticker on the downside of the fan (you can't reach it when mounted).

They seem to have some kind of strong spring inside them as they pop up a little when I press on the bottom and then they pop back. The oil doesn't seem to have made any difference so it's probably gummed up inside. It spins but only a turn or maybe not even that when I spit it without power. When I spin it with power, it hesitates and then starts spinning under power, like the old hand spun airplane propellers do in the movies. I don't know if that's normal or not. >> This board & fan are also EXACTLY the same (again down to the >> markings). >> https://www.ebay.com/itm/115338604625?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28 > > Very interesting offer, the slot cover is extremely bent. I can get it for $30 without the bent slot cover. :-> But if I were to replace the graphics card, I'd probably get a better one than these. https://www.ebay.com/itm/165454337289?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28 The reason I show those is they are exactly the same while most of the hits in images.google.com are of a different fan. This one is exact, and even the placement of the capacitors are the same as are the major markings on the two black blocks and the placement of the fan power wires. Even the 1GB of memory is the same as mine. BTW, why is it called EVGA NVIDIA GeForce 210? What's the EVGA mean? >> I can see the same three screws below the fan. >> Do they need to be removed in order to put machine oil on the fan >> spindle? > > Yes, you need to unscrew the fan from the black aluminum cooler. > Then you can remove the sticker on the downside of the fan (you can't > reach it when mounted). I brought the desktop up to the top of my desk and I will watch it closely as I have the side panel removed and a large Honeywell fan blowing on it just in case. I'm watching the fan speed with MSI Afterburner too. https://www.msi.com/Landing/afterburner/graphics-cards There were two checkboxes in the msi afterburner setup, one for Rivatuner. But Rivatuner errors out but I don't know if this error is related or not. "RivaTunerStatisticsServer" "Direct3D12 components cannot be hooked right now." "It is strongly recommended to restart application." I don't even know what rivatuner does but msi afterburner lets me check the temperature and fan speed. I'm afraid to change the fan speed though. Do you have advice on how to set that fan speed curve (but I wonder how accurate it is given it says the fan is spinning when it's not spinning).
