I assumed nothing of the sort. Obviously the SMS should
be shown on the screen that is being used, the big screen
TV if its being used to watch movies or TV.

Not hard to work out which screen the user is in front of.

Even you should be able to work that out if someone was actually
stupid enough to lend you a seeing eye dog and a white cane.

Again, it isnt hard to work out if that is the case.

Not when the desktop is clearly doing some transcoding etc like that.

No reason why the SMS can't be shown in seconds on the phone
if the system is too stupid to work out that the user isnt at the
desktop. And it makes no sense to not do the obvious thing, show
the incoming SMS on what appears to be what the user is using
first, for the unusual scenarios you are desperately looking for.
