There is a similar related issue, incoming Facetime calls.

I have found that I can be working on some task, usually Lightroom or 
Photoshop on my desktop Mac with Facetime open, but not in use and my 
iPhone on my desk. All incoming Facetime call alerts start on my iPhone 
and 5 to 10 seconds later the Facetime window will come to the front on 
the Mac, but only if I ignore the insistent iPhone.

As far as SMS or iMessage alerts go, there is no consistancy. Sometimes 
they pop-up on my sleeping iPhone first, sometimes on the iMac. 
Sometimes there is a delay between the two, sometimes the alert is 
simultaneous.
