I ran your example with 6 compilers, with and without optimising, and
all returned -2.
This is what would be expected on a machine where 'int' is 32 bits and
representation is two's complement. Because INT_MAX, which is 011...111
in binary, is multiplied by two, effectively shifting it left by one
bit, to get 111...110, which is the bit-pattern for -2.
It is UB in C because up to C23, other integer representations were
deemed possible, with different behaviour on overflow. But that hasn't
really been the case for decades.
C23 now accepts two's complement is dominant, but the UB stays, since so
many compilers have taken advantage of it for optimisation purposes. In
this example I guess there wasn't an opportunity to do anything weird.
In the compilers I write and in the languages I implement, such overflow
behaviour is guaranteed, when an i32 calculation needs to have an i32
result.
With other people's optimising C compilers, then you either cross your
fingers, and find which option is needed to give your desired behaviour.
Since the language itself won't help. So much for 'portable assembly'!
