I take issue with this comment on several fronts. For any modern language, there should always be at least two books, an introduction and a reference; it's a mistake to try to combine them. I flat out disagree with the idea that standard documents are mainly for compiler writers -- a well-written standard (and the ISO C standard serves as an example) serves both communities, and indeed it is important that it do so, to ensure that both camps have the same picture. The ISO C standard isn't easy reading, but it describes the language exactly, and is still accessible enough to be read by an experienced developer. The language standard document should be able to serve as the language reference document, and vice versa. When they are not it means someone hasn't been doing their job. > For "C" I meanwhile think that this doesn't hold. First, the pitfalls you are talking about came about only after the C standard was first written; they are a consequence of the language description, not part of it. Second, as a corollary to that, they need to be described separately. There is a lore of language usage (and I think this is true for most languages, not just C) that is important to know but is not really part of either an introductory text or the language reference. As such the lore deserves separate treatment.
