Yes. "Typesetter" was a collaboration between dmr and scj, as
I understood it. I mentioned a willingness to change C to
accommodate Unix, but some of the work around that time (and in
particular in pcc) went the other way, as well.
You've heard of the infamous `/* you are not expected to
understand this */` comment in the 6th Edition Unix source code,
of course.
The genesis of that comment came when they started trying to
port Unix to the Interdata 8/32 computer; the issue was in the
context switching routines.
For those that don't know, conceptually each process on a Unix
system at the time had two contexts it could execute in: either
in user mode, or in the kernel. The kernel was shared between
all processes, but each had its own kernel context that was used
when the CPU entered supervisor mode. Thus, interrupts (for
example) were handled in the context of whatever arbitrary
process happened to be running when the interupt was received;
obviously system calls were run in the kernel context of the
process that invoked them. Nowadays, we would recognize these
"kernel contexts" as threads, but they didn't use that
nomenclature at the time.
I'm glossing over some details, but in a nutshell, to execute a
context switch, a process would invoke the scheduler from within
the kernel; this would select a new process to change to. The
actual change mechanism was to do a coroutine jump to a special
context (process 0, the "swapper"), and from there do another
coroutine jump to the new process's kernel context. That would
then resume execution in the kernel, and eventually return to
user space, completing the switch. Thus, to switch from process
A to B, A enters the kernel and begins running in kernel mode;
it then switches to the swapper, which switches to process B's
kernel mode context, which then returns to B's userspace mode.
Anyway, the actual routines that did the coroutine jumps worked
by invoking a routine written in assembler to do the switch;
that would swap around the necessary CPU state, and then
(effectively) return, but with a twist: instead of returning
directly to its caller, it would arrange to return to *its
caller's caller* (or its grandparent in the call stack, if you
will). This worked on the PDP-11 because the way state was
saved on that machine was always the same, and thus restoration
on return was consistent; but it broke on the Interdata because
the data preserved by the save mechanism depended on how it was
invoked (or rather from where it was invoked), so returning from
a function other than the one that had done the save might
break, and those routines were invoked from different places, so
they _did_ break.
Once they figured out what was going on, the comment documented
a workaround. Ultimately, they realized mucking with the
compiler would not fix the fundamental issue, and that the fix
had to be in the kernel; the primitives were changed to
something resembling setjmp and longjmp, which didn't rely on
this goofy "return from your caller's caller" mechanism, thus
solving the problem once and for all.
Ritchie wrote about it here:
https://www.nokia.com/bell-labs/about/dennis-m-ritchie/odd.html

Nice. It is still nominally maintained.
