As such, they got to decide whether the compiler was correct or not vis the behavior they wanted it to have, provided that that behavior did not violate the standard. I don't think their conclusion -- that what the compiler did was not violating the standard -- was incorrect. It was, however, not what they wanted the compiler to do, and we all agreed that the behavior was bad (which I referred to earlier as "wrong"). The question came up about what the semantics _should_ be, and the consensus was that the standard was underspecified in this regard, to the extent of being almost no help toward guiding any decision. That's more or less what you pointed out above: almost anything was ok, and it was entirely up to the implementation. - Dan C.
