I was talking about the utility of using my time to find an example of behavior (beyond `realloc`) of something that went from explicitly well-defined (or IB, or unspecified, etc) in some version of the C standard to UB in a later version. Though bluntly a single instance ought to be enough to show that it _can_ happen. What I was attempting to express was that I'm not sure it's worth my taking the time to do that. I don't mean to be unpleasant about it, and if it were a discussion over lunch or something? Sure. But posting here; what would be the end result? I suspect no one would learn anything new or find it terribly useful. It would probably lead to a round of arguing about whether it was actually UB, with different interpretations being posted, with predictably variable levels of quality. I suspect there would be some amount of ambiguity pointed out in the standard. The best case outcome, for me, would be finding that I was technically wrong in my assessment, that something I thought had changed was actually always UB, and perhaps I would learn something. But it's an awful lot of work, and back and forth, for what is ultimately not a lot of gain. Note that this moves the goalposts more than a little bit vis my original statement, which was a response to something Scott said about (as I interpreted it) finding fault with the original programmer who produced a UB-bearing program. I took exception to that because, as I said, that there is code that is in production, that was written with care and attention and a solid understanding of C _as it existed at the time that code was written_, and that now exhibits UB because it _either_ predated the C standard, _or_ made use of something that changed (e.g., `realloc`) in the standard. I simply feel one should not cast aspertions onto the programmer in such cases; they could not have foreseen the future. Simply fix the program, if it is reasonable to do so, but don't seek to "blame" them for being "wrong," because they were not wrong at the time and judging them (not the program, but the person) relative to a later standard is unreasonable. I stand by that. Whether `realloc` is the only such example of something that has changed between standards (and I'm not sure about `longjmp` from a non-nested signal handler, as I mentioned elsewhere...emphasis on the _not sure_ part FWIW) is immaterial, and cannot be hand-waved away as "well, that was only one time...". The fact is that it did happen, the commitee obviously showed itself willing to do it, and there is absolutely nothing saying that it could not happen again. I think my `mul` example, or something very like it, similarly. - Dan C. (For the record, I don't blame the committee, either; I think they were in a tough spot. But just as we must acknowledge the reality of UB, we must similarly acknowledge the reality of this situation.)
