None of that answers my question. When I go to some web sites with videos, they often have a choice of downloads. One is WMV, the other is QT. If Quicktime is a technology, not a file format, what is the latter? My understanding is that Quicktime is technology that includes both software AND a file format that Apple originally designed. But the file format isn't proprietary, you can play QT videos with software other than QT. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

MOV is a container format.
AVI is a container format.
MKV is a container format.
MP4 is a standardized container based on MOV.
So even if MOV ceased to exist tomorrow, it lives on
with a different three letter extension.

Each contains audio and video streams. Which
are encoded with various sets of codecs.
And while there are articles like this, they don't
do the subject justice, by telling you which
containers really suck. So this is hardly
a comparison. It's just a half-filled table.

Who said either one off them specifically? The original mention was: "The great thing about QT being phased out on Windows is that websites offering only QT formats will have to adapt, so no one will any longer need QT." They didn't say "only QT encoding format", and were probably referring to QT file formats. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***
