apple is rewriting it, which should be obvious from their indifference
to windows quicktime issues. it's also a lot more work than one might
think.

No shit. The point was that the front end, the UI needs to be broken up
functionally so that it is clear what is going on to the user. You're
just churning. Again.

You know Apple is re-writing it? (Note: maintaining ≠ rewriting).

Of course it's work. But in the end much less work than maintaining a
large cumbersome over-complex, over-reaching piece of shit.

Yes. And Apple could design an interface that allows users to interact
with separate apps for certain related pieces of functionality while
still implementing synchronization in the most user-friendly way on the
back end.

sure do. apple has publicly stated on more than one occasion that
they're rewriting itunes from the ground up and the fact that they're
not going to fix the quicktime issues on windows is additional proof,
as itunes on windows is based on qtml.

> Of course it's work. But in the end much less work than maintaining a
> large cumbersome over-complex, over-reaching piece of shit.

definitely not.

rewriting itunes is a fuckload of work, and unlike other apps apple has
rewritten in the past, they can't gut its features and then call it an
upgrade, as they did with imovie, final cut, quicktime x and photos.

also unlike those apps, itunes also has to run on *both* mac *and*
windows, and since quicktime is history, it will need to use an
entirely new cross platform framework, perhaps a variant of yellow box.

in other words, it's not as simple as you make it out to be.

plus, itunes needs to not only sync content to devices (the part that
most people bitch about), but also connect with apple music (which has
its own set of issues that need to be resolved), itunes match, icloud
and more.

and if that's not enough, the itunes store back-end infrastructure is
also being reworked, which scary as it may seem, still uses web
objects.

put simply, rewriting itunes is a huge undertaking with a *lot* riding
on it, including millions of transactions happening every day. apple
*can't* fuck it up. if people can't buy music, movies or apps, there's
going to be a lot of very, very pissed off people.

BS about infeasibility snipped. In the end iTunes has gone to far. A
re-design of the UI is needed that breaks it up functionally. To be
sure much of the underlying functional code can be used.

i didn't say it's infeasible. i said it's a shitload of work, much more
than rewriting a single app such as iphoto->photos, and it is.

the itunes store began life nearly 15 years ago, before anyone had any
idea how big it would become. they're redoing *all* of it.

be careful for what you ask for. every time they redesign the ui, they
make it worse, particularly with itunes 12.

> To be

then it would be maintenance, not a rewrite.

Kinda proving the point that once too far down the road, it's time to
start fresh with the UI design. That in turn can re-use much of the
existing underpinning.

the ui is easy to change and has. it's the underpinnings that are the
problem, which also restricts what they can do.

fifteen years ago, nobody expected the itunes platform to be what it is
today.

Bzzt.

Precisely why it should be properly re-done. You can't keep hanging
more and more on something and expect it to work properly or be clear in
function.

exactly the point. changing the ui is nothing more than aesthetics.

redoing the entire app *and* the back-end is what's needed and what's
happening.

If you say so. So now you've changed position. First it was "oh my,
too large to do", now it's a re-do? Really?

If true I look forward to it.

Reference? And as previously noted, maintenance ≠ rewriting.

Either Eddie Cue or Craig Federighi, I forget which.

By "broken up functionally" do you mean that they should move things
like Podcasts, Photos, Notes, and iBooks into separate apps?

"the presence of an unusually large number of insects or animals in a

Bullshit. You install iTunes yourself. It includes QuickTime. And you
can easily remove it.

The person who says Bullshit hasn't ever installed iTunes or if he
has, he doesn't know what he's talking about, because the Internet
is filled with articles describing the infestation, and the many
steps to get rid of the most noxious components of the infestation.

I don't think that person who said BS knows anything about iTunes
because he doesn't seem to be aware of what everyone else knows.

You're a lying troll - "VPN User" under a new nym. I've installed iTunes
many times on many different Windows systems, and removing it is a
simple visit to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
