Loads of articles describing stupid Rabe Goldberg methods for installing
iTunes without QuickTime instead of the plain and simple

1. Install iTunes
2. Remove QuickTime

??

Agreed, making QT a silent but obviously unnecessary bundle with iTunes
was stupid, but your reaction to it is not any smarter.

iTunes doesn't install QuickTime and hasn't for... I dunno, several
years. 5 years? 4 years?

Since 10.5 in the year 2014, according to archive.org .

https://web.archive.org/web/20141126112145/http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203459

If you download a copy of iTunes for Windows today,
there *is* no QuickTime in it. Because as part of
these fine discussions, I had a look.

It's been years since I installed iTunes as part
of diagnostic work, and the last time I installed
it, there was QuickTime in it. But apparently, not
any more. (The modern version of that web page,
removes the info needed to date the achievement,
which is why I had to go back using archive.org
to find it.)

So Apple knew they weren't going to be doing
security updates for QuickTime on Windows, since
2014.

Which is why iTunes is the classic example of "bloatware" in the Wikipedia

No, "VPN User", it's not. It's simply a collection of programs that are
easily installed and removed.

Bloatware isn't malware, nor is it an infestation.

It has been a long time since I tried to get rid of the half dozen
or more "things" that are installed against your wishes when you
install iTunes on Windows.

But, as I recall, some didn't uninstall the normal way, so, iTunes
is more aptly described as an infestation than actual malware.

Bonjour, Quicktime, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device
Support, Apple Software Update, etc.

I was forced to install iTunes to initialize an iPod, which is
how I experienced the infestation. The software adds zero value
and is bloatware like you can't believe. Yet, Mac users are happy
with it, but they're not very discerning folk so that's to be
expected.

At least with Quicktime being deprecated, the bloatware infestation
is a little smaller for those who are forced to use iTunes.

Nope. Open Programs control panel, select Quicktime, Click Uninstall.

"Joe Clock" is a resident troll who changes his nym to avoid kill

Not *all* Mac users are *happy* with iTunes. I doubt if there are that
many beyond a few apologists. It has always seemed like an abomination
which one can and sometimes must live with.

Small programs that do very few tasks very well have always seemed to
me the best way to go for computing. If, behind the scenes, various
complicated architecture is needed, so be it, that is possibly
inevitable. But I don't believe it is a good thing to subject the user

That's quite an insult to all those good abominations of software out there.

Something I put out there a year or so ago: break iTunes up into
functional, smaller components and possibly have some "glue" in the
background to coordinate stuff such as iCloud.

May I ask a serious question, which I don't want those Apologists
answering?

HOW DO MAC USERS USE iTUNES (with an iPod) ANYWAY?

I have only an iPod and my kids have an iPod each. I only use SharePod
(which sits on the iPod - there is nothing on Windows) to copy songs
from any of those iPods to any of my PCs and then from any of my PCs
to any of my iPods.

That's the entire use mode.

I can even copy songs from anyone else's iPod to anyone else's PC and
back and forth, but I don't do that because most people I know don't
use iPods anymore.

On the PC I don't keep any MP3 songs, except temporarily, mainly
because I don't play anything on the PC (crappy speakers). So I rip
a CD to the PC and get 20 MP3s out of it, and then I connect the
iPod to the PC and I copy the songs over from the PC to the iPod.

If my kid has a few songs that I like, I also connect the kid's
iPod to a second USB port and I just copy the files from the kid's
iPod over to my iPod or to my wife's iPod.

It's so simple, its' *supposed* to be that way.
There's absolutely nothing whatsoever complicated with this use model.

Knowing that this is all done with 50KBytes of free software, I have
to wonder what hundreds of megabytes of iTunes would do for me given
this simple use model?

How do Mac users do what I do all the time using iTunes' use model?

they don't, because your use model is primitive and slow. you also
can't organize music beyond a rigid hierarchy.

itunes users (not just on the mac) can do all sorts of things you can't
ever do and with little to no effort.

You're one of the Apologists, right?

The entire iTunes "organization" model is designed because people can't
find their own files. They have them scattered all over the place, and
they can't find anything they need.

Me? I am one of the most organized people in the world.
All my songs immediately after ripping get customized ID3v2 tags.

No matter which iPod the songs go on, all the iPods have the exact
same hierarchy, based on their ID3 tags.

All this is done in batch mode with a free (tiny) MP3 tagger, but I
could just as well tag songs manually using just SharePod, which
makes it point and click easy to change tags (cut and paste if you
like).

As I said, I don't see the advantage of storing songs on the PC
as I keep entire half-terabyte hard drives filled with MP3 songs,
all similarly organized. I can find any song I need in a split
second.

It's actually *harder* to use iTunes because you can't do half
of what I can do with iTunes' restrictive model.

For example, can you hook up your wife's iPod and your kid's
iPods at the same time to your PC and copy songs from one to
the other on any PC in your house (even across the local
network if you like), with only 50 Kbytes of free software?

nonsense

more nonsense and the computer can do that better than humans ever
could.

you might think you are but you're clearly not.

no you definitely can't find any song you 'need' in a split second.

just try to find all songs from the 1960s that haven't been played in
the last six months and rated 3 * or higher. good luck on that.

with itunes, that's entirely automatic with the playlist kept up to
date.

nonsense.

itunes does far more than you feeble little brain can comprehend and in
far easier ways.

it's *your* use model that's restrictive because you're stuck with a
rigid file hierarchy.

yes, and entirely wirelessly. no usb cables at all.
