Ah, no Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc. Just audio. :( Is there even a
third party that can do those without iTunes? :/

There's no single Windows program that does everything iTunes does.
There are various disparate programs that do one or two things here and
there; but none of them do everything.

That's kind of the point of this whole sub-thread: iTunes is considered
by many people to be bloatware because it contains so much functionality
that the user interface is unwieldy, and arguably could be better
designed as a group of separate apps that handle different parts of its
functionality.

But even if we all agree iTunes is bloatware, that doesn't magically
mean it's also horrible in every way, or malware, or some sort of
infestation. And the claims by the trolls here in this thread that
removing iTunes from Windows is impossibly hard are lies. A quick visit
to Control Panels > Add/Remove Programs and a few clicks is all that is
needed - I know because I've done it more times than I've bothered to
count on various Windows PCs through many years.

That's not why I consider it bloatware. I consider it bloatware
because it installs a bunch of stuff that isn't needed. Getting rid
of that stuff is not as difficult as some have said, but more
complicated than just Programs and Features » Uninstall as others
have said.

I've already posted a link to the Web page where I discuss this, with
specific instructions for curbing the bloat.

I don't really see a major problem with the user interface. It's not
perfect, but what user interface is?

You're basically saying the same thing. Those things it installs support
features you claim aren't needed. But other people do want those features.
I know because I'm one of them.

the only reason he thinks they aren't needed is because he doesn't know
what they do.

for instance, with bonjour, just plug in a printer and start printing
without having to configure anything.

they also don't use any cpu resources when idle so there is no downside.

As a Mac owner, I never take anything for granted.

http://osxdaily.com/2009/09/15/disable-bonjour-by-turning-off-mdnsresponder/

I used to turn off mDNSresponder on my Mac G4 running 10.2.7 (picked
for its ability to run MacOS 9.04 at the same time). And I don't
even remember the hairball at the time, that made me do that.

Windows has similar features. There is SSDP, whose only function
is to make "fancy" looking icons for your printer or NAS. but,
that service can be disabled without preventing anything from
working. And my rule of thumb is, I only get interested in
"sticking a fork" in a subsystem, when it makes a nuisance of
itself. I don't know what mDNSresponder was doing at the time,
but it got my interest enough to be in the habit of killing it.

And here you see the "pace of progress". mDNSresponder replaced by
DiscoveryD replaced by the older mDNSresponder again.

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/05/26/apple-discoveryd-replaced-with-mdnsresponder/

We have other examples in Windows, of things that don't
behave, and have their run privileges removed. On my
Win10 machine right now, it's the Search Indexer that
doesn't read any files, and rails one core on the CPU
100% all night. And that's soon to get the fork.
It's the "Gong show for Services".

I don't see any reason to dump on users who are
savvy enough to recognize problems and deal with them.

    Paul

they're not removing stuff because of problems. they're removing stuff

Yep. What we see in this thread so far are people bitching about the
mere *existence* of software packages that were installed, regardless of
the functionality they enable. Instead, they seem to *assume* the
packages are completely worthless, which is untrue.

That has definitely NOT been my experience on Mac. Most printers work,
but two in the past few months required me to download and install
software from the printer manufacturers' websites.

Ironically (considering the general flow of this thread), most of that
software turned out to be entirely unnecessary.

Even weirder, I later removed all of it and later had reasons to use the
same printers (they belonged to other people). When I selected the
printer, the Mac told me that Apple had drivers and would I like to
install them? Saying yes ran an installer for a few seconds and then
the printer worked without all the crap the manufacturer's program
dropped into my Dock and /Applications.

HOWEVER, how the heck is having a PRINTER "just work" necessary for iTunes?

os x includes support for a shitload of printers, both current and
recent, so all that's needed is connect the printer. if the necessary
drivers are not there, they're automatically downloaded without the
user needing to do anything (assuming the printer is not ancient where
there are no drivers to be found).

What I said happened, happened. They did not work until I installed the
crap from the manufacturers. SECOND time around, the less bloated Apple
drivers were downloaded. But NOT automatically—Mac asked me for
permission first.

then it must be some obscure printer for which it couldn't find any
drivers.

normally it's plug and print without any fuss at all. it just works.

Why not read the post before you answer?

Repeat: Deleted the crap thinking I'd never need it again.
Which turned out to be correct, because when I _did_ want to use the
SAME printers again, Apple offered to install their drivers.
OFFERED, not "automatically downloaded."

why don't you do the same?

in other words, you modified the system, altering the way it normally
works.

on an out of the box mac, plug and print. it just works. at most, you
only need to add the printer. it's very simple. been there done that
many times.

LAST repetition. Neither of them worked and Apple did not install
anything nor offer to do so. I downloaded what the manufacturer claimed
was needed, and then they worked. Then I removed the crap the
manufacturer said I needed. Second time I went where those printers
were, Apple did offer to download drivers.

again: you had an obscure printer that was not directly supported so
you had to manually install drivers, a printer so unusual that you're
too embarrassed to even say its model number.

Yet another repetition: it was not my printer.
And never did I claim to be embarrassed to not remember the model
number. I described what happened, and my biggest mistake was in
attempting to have a conversation with someone whose main goal in life
is to call as many people as possible "liar"

Good-bye.

it doesn't matter who owned it.

i didn't call you a liar.

i told you how printing works in os x. you said you had a different
experience, so i told you why that would have happened.
