Just try to connect any number of iPods to any number of Windows
computers on the same network and transfer songs back and forth
to any of them (take all the time you want). Good luck on that.

Works just fine. At at least with the Mac version, you don't even need
to connect them to the computer (I suspect the same is true with Windows
iTunes, but I've never used wifi syncing in Windows iTunes).

Bullshit.

Just as an example, a playlist I use frequently has the following
properties:

Music I have listened to previously, but less often than all the other
music I've ever listened to sorted by the least recent to most recent.

Most of my playlists are similar to that: music of one type or
another, not listened to since date X, and the playlist updating
itself as I listen to items.

I'm not saying Sharepod can't do that, but there's certainly no
indication on its home page that it can. And all the repetitive
shrieking from BOTH sides doesn't help.

In my case, I plug the ipod into my Macbook, iTunes fires up and it is
listed as "dorayme's iPod". I go to one of the playlists I have and
organise it how I want (bringing in podcasts or songs, deleting
others) and then sync the iPod with that playlist. Because of my
incredible stupidity, it took a while to learn the ins and outs of
this absurd dance with the software and its relations with devices.

On a little transistor size player with its own speaker, that takes a
usb stick, it is just wonderfully simple, I *drag* whatever I want to
the usb stick on my Mac and then stick the usb stick in the player and
it plays the files! No visible software to offend the eye or harass
the sense of decent technical proportion.

I have sometimes made playlists on iTunes to play music from the
Macbook (that acts like a desktop with its connections to screens and
speakers). But that is another story, unconnected to your question
about iPods.

I use it with my iPhone for various things from app and music management
to backing up the iPhone. It does those things very well. It's only
shortcoming is it's poor UI and over-reach. Should really be broken
into several smaller programs that have more specific roles.

I snipped the rest of your speech as irrelevant to the usual use mode of
iPhone/iPod/iPad.

That's a very good term for what some of the people here who have
been defending the iTunes infestation should be called. Apologists.

I was pretty sure they never themselves ever installed or used iTunes,
at least not on Windows, because they were actually defending the
iTunes infestation, as it that could possibly be tenable given the
very many reviews to the contrary on the net.

I had to install iTunes to initialize an iPod, but then I deleted the
infestation, program by program, even startup lines in the registry,
where if I didn't have a before-and-after snapshot program, I would
have never been able to eradicate the infestation.

All you need to load an iPod is SharePod freeware. That's it.
Nice and small, just like you said. And that freeware doesn't even
have to be installed on your PC since it can reside on the iPod itself.

(You do need .NET Framework unfortunately, if you use a more recent
version of SharePod, but if you use older versions, you don't need that,
and, yes, NET Framework is huge bloatware also).

What does iTunes do that you can't do with small simple programs if you
have half a brain?

It seems that the more brainless someone is the more they like iTunes.

All I need, for example, is to copy songs from my iPod to the PC and
vice versa, where my concept of a "library" is simply whatever songs
are on the iPod. I don't keep any songs on the PC except temporarily
anyway because the PC has lousy speakers and I only listen to songs
on the road.

So, iTunes is something like hundreds of megabytes of bloatware that
a small 50KB free SharePod program can replace easily for me.

I'm pretty smart. And you seem to be what people here called an
Apologist.

And, even if I wasn't so smart, I can google and I can see scores
of articles which tell me that iTunes is bloatware even if I didn't
have the experience myself.

And, I have myself uninstalled the infestation on Windows, and
you, being the Apologist that you are, don't even realize how
many files are scattered about, even though you told the whole
shebang to install into C:\junk (iTunes itself will install there
but nothing else in the infestation will follow your directives).

You, being the Apologist someone referred to, wouldn't know any
of this, because you have never done it (obviously).

And, you, being the Apologist, don't even realize that SharePod
has more power in 50KBytes of software than the hundreds of
megabytes of that iTunes infestation has.

How do you copy any song you want from any iPod you want to
any PC you want (as long as they're all on the same network)?

You can't.
I can.

That's because I'm pretty smart (although this isn't even
difficult to figure out). You can't even figure this out,
so, clearly you're not all that smart.

you can google and find that the earth is flat and that the moon

and who cares if it's bloated. hard drives are dirt cheap. the amount

Nobody here is debating that it's bloatware. This argument is about it
