Anyone claiming they ran a qtml version of iTunes without QuickTime
installed is simply wrong. That's what the *QT* is: QuickTime Media
Layer.

QuickTime stopped being bundled with iTunes with version 10.5 of
iTunes. iTunes stopped requiring QuickTime at some point prior to 10.5,
but I couldn't guess when that was, since I nearly never use iTunes on
Windows.

I said nothing about qtml. I said iTunes installed QuickTime but that
iTunes continued to work after I removed QuickTime.

If some other version needed QT, whatever. What I said happened.
I was there.

i said itunes was originally written on top of qtml and therefore
*required* quicktime.

you said it continued to work. later versions might, but early versions
definitely did not.

And you are wrong. iTunes hasn't installed quicktime in many years. 5
years. Maybe more.

It happened on Windows after 2010 and before 2014.

Read better.

iTunes *originally*....

And no, those versions of iTunes did *not* work if you removed
Quicktime. They wouldn't even launch.

QuickTime comes in as a component of iTunes.

iTunes won't start without QuickTime.

QuickTime won't start without AppleApplicationSupport.

iTunes has as many as five MSI files inside it,
QuickTime is one of them. The iTunes installer
lost the Gears optical disc burning software
at some point.

The QuickTime installer has three MSI files inside it.
AppleSoftwareUpdates and AppleApplicationSupport are
the other two, besides QuickTime.msi.

There will be just a few unhappy people out there,
when their iTunes becomes a flaming hulk of useless bytes :-)
If you have iTunes, be careful before swinging that
club, and removing QuickTime :-)

Apple decided it was cool to tie iTunes to QuickTime.
Now, I bet they are regretting this unnecessary
design decision.

Not true, at least with my rather old version (11) of iTunes. I just
uninstalled Quicktime. When I then started iTunes, it warned me that
would need Quicktime to play movies, but it continues to play mp3 files
as before.

I was concerned about this, not for myself, but for many people I know
who use iTunes to sync their Apple portable music playing devices.
Personally, I can't stand iTunes, but I'm glad for them that they can
continue to use it.

I just checked the latest version, and QuickTime is missing.
I don't test iTunes all that often (and don't use it myself),
and it always had a QuickTime MSI in the past.

https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/itunes12/031-51750-20160321-347A2ABE-EE10-11E5-82F2-A815BE379832/iTunesSetup.exe

SetupAdmin.exe 3/9/2016
    Bonjour.msi 3/8/2016
    AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi 3/9/2016
    AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi 3/3/2016
    AppleApplicationSupport.msi 3/19/2016
    iTunes.msi 3/19/2016

I guess that's why Apple has nothing
to say today. They've been planning this for
a while. My guess would be, since March 8 :-)

It'll be interesting to see what they use as a
substitute for display purposes on Windows.
FFMPEG maybe ? :-)

Their substitute is... nothing.

When you start iTunes 12.3.3.17 it says "you need
QuickTime to play movies". A helpful web page
pops up telling you to use "Open with". Pretty
helpful. At least it's no longer tied to QuickTime.

Hm, iTunes won't start without a matching version of QT on my MacPro
running Win7 Ultimate Pro and neither on another MacPro running WinXP
Pro SP3...

That's your decison, but I can guarantte you that iTunes for Windows is
far much better than iTunes for Mac OS X. - Alone it's capability of
both ripping to uncompressed FLAC and playing FLAC files is a feature
that I won't be without.

So, do you have an iPod? If so, what do you use to update it?

(I think iTunes is bloated but okay. Maybe I've just used it for so
long that I'm used to its flaws and don't notice them any more. I did
of course disable the unwanted add-on installs like Bonjour.)

No more. I had an iPod "Classic" (hard disk) unit which I gave away,
and a Nano, which was stolen. Since then I use non-Apple mp3 players,
which I like just as well and aren't tied to Apple's proprietary stuff,
and costs much less.

What about for iPhones with everything else and NOT requiring to install

I don't have an iPhone so I wouldn't know how that works. I never claimed
to know everything. I just know that iTunes is bloatware which isn't needed
to manage iPods.

Looking at the Sharepod home page https://www.getsharepod.com/ it says
"Sharepod is a dead simple music transfer app.
It allows you to copy songs, videos, podcasts and more
from any iPhone, iPad or iPod to your PC computer and into
    iTunes."

So, I would assume that you can transfer any MP3 file from any iPhone
to and from any PC on your network to and from any iPhone that's
also on your network, "dead simple", just like the web site says.

The Apple Apologists don't know what "dead simple" means.

Yes, I looked at that too. Prominently missing are mention of ripping
CDs to AAC format, creating playlists, and editing tags. Does it do
those?

Of course not, and since he doesn't need anything else, those features
are obviously completely worthless. You're talking to an ignorant troll.
