I have a new Apple TV; one of the reasons I bought it was so I could play HD home movies stored on my iMac on the big new HD TV set. As I understand it, to play a home movie via Apple TV, the movie must be in the iTunes library. HD movie clips in .mov format straight from the camera import into iTunes properly and the only one I've tested played just fine via Apple TV. A 30-minute .mov file in standard definition (1.94 GB) imports to iTunes. The exact same movie in 720 HD .mov format (9.17 GB) will not import. A 19-minute .mov file in 1020 HD format (33.67 GB) will not import. When trying to import the HD files using File > Add to Library in iTunes, clicking on the file simply closes the search window. When trying to add by drag and drop, the dragged file carries the green dot with a plus sign, but when dropped nothing happens. This is with iTunes (12.2.2.25) and Yosemite 10.10.5. The 1020 HD file was created using iMovie HD and iDVD; I don't know what was used to create the 720 file, but since it's a .mov I assume it was done on a Mac. Does iTunes not accept HD .mov files? If not, in what format does it accept HD files? And how do I convert a .mov to that format? Or is there a limit to the size of files imported to iTunes? -- John Varela

If it had VPN (wishful) then I'd be really happy.

But as always I like for the reality distortion field to fade before buying anything.

Do you have an AirPlay able Mac? I use AirPlay on the Mac to send the Mac screen to the Apple TV. Then I play content via the web (browser : television shows, netflix, etc.). I have the Apple TV wired to the router in my office. If I want to watch a videoclip on the Mac I play it in QT7. This covers a wide range of formats. Occasionally I Handbrake a file to .mp4 to avoid using the VLC player (I just don't like it). In the "TV room" I have an Apple keyboard and mouse (that came with the Mac) and I use those to control the Mac. This is not perfect as either controller will occasional break connection. The mouse can be slightly erratic at time. (Distance and obstacles between them to the Mac upstairs).

This is a fine work-around, but it doesn't allow storage and organization in a convenient location for all your video where you can poke around and watch what you want from the comfort of your livingroom any time you like. iTunes is great for that, but you do have to get all the video in question into iTunes. After a lot of time messing with all that I found VideoDrive 2 really excellent for that.

MKV containers, specifically. Since Apple's MOV can only contain a single subtitle track, it is a poor choice for some movies. iTunes also does not pickup additional files (for example, external sub files or even .nfo files containing extended data about the file). iTunes also doesn't play AVI or WMV files, though these are less of a problem as time goes on. I still have a lot of DVD rips I would have to do again to get into iTunes, but I don't want to take that time since Plex plays them all just fine. Also, I have a lot of movie with mutliple audio tracks, something else that MOV is overly touchy about. One of my versions of Blade Runner has... I think 6 audio tracks. Works perfectly in Plex, not so much in iTunes. -- Monique: He keeps putting his testicles all over me. Lane: Excuse me?

Since Apple's MOV can only contain a > single subtitle track, it is a poor choice for some movies. I encode all of my movies as MPEG-4 containers with H.264 encoding - they multiple subtitle/CC tracks. There's absolutely no requirement to use MOV containers with iTunes. I couldn't care less about MKV. If you do, iTunes clearly isn't for you. BTW, nobody here is suggesting ever person on the planet should use iTunes. > iTunes also does not pickup additional files (for example, external > sub files or even .nfo files containing extended data about the file). Meh. Much better to have the movie and meta data self-contained within one single file, IMO. Much easier to manage that way. > iTunes also doesn't play AVI or WMV files, though these are less of a > problem as time goes on. Yeah, see I never bought into Windows for media since it's always lagged behind Mac OS; so I don't have any silly AVI and MWV files to deal with. Sucks to be you! ; ) > Also, I have a lot of movie with mutliple audio tracks, something else > that MOV is overly touchy about. One of my versions of Blade Runner > has... I think 6 audio tracks. VideoDrive is not an alternative to this. It's just an easier way of "importing my stuff into iTunes", despite it's format, the presence of subtitles, etc.
