#31171 — Home Movies on Apple TV

SubjectHome Movies on Apple TV
Message-ID<51W5y0sPNk52-pn2-sTEesy0PlOU6@localhost>
I have a new Apple TV; one of the reasons I bought it was so I could
play HD home movies stored on my iMac on the big new HD TV set.

As I understand it, to play a home movie via Apple TV, the movie
must be in the iTunes library. HD movie clips in .mov format
straight from the camera import into iTunes properly and the only
one I've tested played just fine via Apple TV.

A 30-minute .mov file in standard definition (1.94 GB) imports to
iTunes. The exact same movie in 720 HD .mov format (9.17 GB) will
not import. A 19-minute .mov file in 1020 HD format (33.67 GB) will
not import.

When trying to import the HD files using File > Add to Library in
iTunes, clicking on the file simply closes the search window. When
trying to add by drag and drop, the dragged file carries the green
dot with a plus sign, but when dropped nothing happens.

This is with iTunes (12.2.2.25) and Yosemite 10.10.5. The 1020 HD
file was created using iMovie HD and iDVD; I don't know what was
used to create the 720 file, but since it's a .mov I assume it was
done on a Mac.

Does iTunes not accept HD .mov files? If not, in what format does it
accept HD files? And how do I convert a .mov to that format? Or is
there a limit to the size of files imported to iTunes?

you do realize that a new appletv is expected in a couple of weeks,
right?

.mov is a container, not a format.

what matters is the codec used in the movie. if a movie won't import
properly, then you may need to convert it to a standard codec using
handbrake.

the only limit to how many movies is how big of a hard drive you have.
movies, especially hd, add up fast.

My Apple TV is one or two minor mods older than the current one.

When they announced the lower price I took it as a "clearance" signal
and I'm waiting for the new one. I expect (hope) for a good "bump" in
capability. If it had VPN (wishful) then I'd be really happy.

Yeah - I've seen those (or similar). But as always I like for the

I make things a little simpler. Do you have an AirPlay able Mac?

I use AirPlay on the Mac to send the Mac screen to the Apple TV. Then I
play content via the web (browser : television shows, netflix, etc.). I
have the Apple TV wired to the router in my office.

If I want to watch a videoclip on the Mac I play it in QT7. This covers
a wide range of formats. Occasionally I Handbrake a file to .mp4 to
avoid using the VLC player (I just don't like it).

In the "TV room" I have an Apple keyboard and mouse (that came with the
Mac) and I use those to control the Mac. This is not perfect as either
controller will occasional break connection. The mouse can be slightly
erratic at time. (Distance and obstacles between them to the Mac upstairs).

This is a fine work-around, but it doesn't allow storage and
organization in a convenient location for all your video where you can
poke around and watch what you want from the comfort of your livingroom
any time you like. iTunes is great for that, but you do have to get
all the video in question into iTunes. After a lot of time messing
with all that I found VideoDrive 2 really excellent for that.

I much prefer Plex to anything else I've tried, but that will not play
DRMed video. That's fine for me, I unDRM everything anyway.

Neither of the alternatives mentioned seem as simple to me as importing
my stuff into iTunes and using Home Sharing to access that content on
any Mac, iOS device, or Apple TV I want.

iTunes doesn't handle a lot of formats without additional work.

MKV containers, specifically. Since Apple's MOV can only contain a
single subtitle track, it is a poor choice for some movies. iTunes also
does not pickup additional files (for example, external sub files or
even .nfo files containing extended data about the file).

iTunes also doesn't play AVI or WMV files, though these are less of a
problem as time goes on. I still have a lot of DVD rips I would have to
do again to get into iTunes, but I don't want to take that time since
Plex plays them all just fine.

Also, I have a lot of movie with mutliple audio tracks, something else
that MOV is overly touchy about. One of my versions of Blade Runner
has... I think 6 audio tracks.

Works perfectly in Plex, not so much in iTunes.

I encode all of my movies as MPEG-4 containers with H.264 encoding -
they multiple subtitle/CC tracks. There's absolutely no requirement to
use MOV containers with iTunes.

I couldn't care less about MKV. If you do, iTunes clearly isn't for you.
BTW, nobody here is suggesting ever person on the planet should use
iTunes.

> iTunes also does not pickup additional files (for example, external

Meh. Much better to have the movie and meta data self-contained within
one single file, IMO. Much easier to manage that way.

Yeah, see I never bought into Windows for media since it's always lagged
behind Mac OS; so I don't have any silly AVI and MWV files to deal with.
Sucks to be you! ; )

You keep mentioning MOV as if it's the only thing iTunes supports. You
couldn't be more wrong.

The Plex UX sucks donkey ass. No thanks.

VideoDrive is not an alternative to this. It's just an easier way of
"importing my stuff into iTunes", despite it's format, the presence of
subtitles, etc.

The hell it doesn't. Finder locates any video very quickly and plays it
quicker. Nothing is more convenient than Finder. Using Spotlight or
CMD-F I can find 90% of videos in less than 1 s. The rest are hard
because they are older files with bad names and no keywords tagged to them.

iTunes is more and more of a sickening spaghetti morass of shit than it
ever was - and it was a sickening spaghetti morass of shit 5 years ago.

That's half the battle of stupid, useless time wasting idiocy that Apple
foist upon us ...

I'll look into it.

Huh? It's far simpler and faster to use a remote control on my TV with
an Apple TV connected (four button presses: Computers > My Computer
> Movies > Play) than it would be to log into a computer, open a folder
(possibly navigating around for a bit), double-click a movie, and play
it through AirPlay.

Meanwhile, I've already started my movie with the remote. : D

To the contrary, iTunes Home Sharing makes media consumption quite
effortless in this house. It's available wherever I need it with nice,
easy-to-use interfaces.

Hasn't presented any obstacles to me. Maybe you are allowing yourself to
be defeated too easily. ; )

Your choice if you want to deal with iTunes - which I avoid like the plague.

Further, you can't play a local television station stream the way you
describe.

CMD-F or Spotlight locates a file pretty much before I've finished
typing the search...

Mostly I find them just by typing a few letters. Occasionally I have to
folder dig. Occasionally means I don't recall the last time I had to do so.

We seem to be experiencing different Apple universes. And odd. You've
agreed in the past that iTunes is shit. I guess for other reasons.

Not at all. I despise iTunes and avoid it as much as possible. The
layout and navigation of it could be the basis for abject incompetence
in human factors engineering.

There's nothing to "deal with". I encode one of my DVDs with Handbrake,
drag the resulting movie file into iTunes, and like magic it's
automatically available everywhere I need (iOS devices, Macs, Apple
TVs). It is simple and effective.

I can get local television stations on my television already. No need to
stream them.

> CMD-F or Spotlight locates a file pretty much before I've finished

And you still have to log into your computer, find it, and open and
stream it manually. By the time you're done my movie has already
started with just a couple button presses. I'll stick with iTunes Home
Sharing. : )

You have to log into a computer, find a file, open it, stream it. By
the time you've done all that, my movie is playing.

I don't think I've said or thought iTunes was complete shit. It has
bugs, sure. It has serious UX issues, sure. But complete shit? Far from
it. And for this particular use case, it works quite well and has for
years in this house.

That's your personal problem. iTunes Home Sharing works exceptionally
well for this purpose in my experience. I even have several
computer-illiterate family members who use and love it.

I just plop DVD's into the DVD player. (Ironic given your television
reply below).

I certainly don't need my movies available wherever I go.

I don't have "local televsion" having taken down the roof antenna and
discontinued cable.

As you like. Since I use my home computer a lot, hitting the Apple Play
button is really no big deal.

Wow. You win that race by about 30 seconds. I'd lose more time than
that fucking around with iTunes in order that it be ready to save that
30 seconds.

Not a use case here.
