I see the kids with backpacks all over. In my day we had bookbags. I can't even find a photo of one. They were like a small duffel bag without all the extra pockets most have, preferably in the school colors. Showing up with a backpack would have gotten you a seat next to the kid who brought his lunch in his red barn lunch box. https://lunchbox.collectionhero.com/view_item.php?id=30630 He was beyond weird but he was also the fastest typist in the school. Today he would be 'on the spectrum' but in the '60s he was someone you tried to avoid. No teasing or harassment and anyone who tried would get corrected by fellow students. He was sort of a protected species.

Those in high school near my home are more difficult to differentiate, it is a public high school, so no uniforms, and I don't remember seeing bulky packs. I asked chatgpt, it confirms the "no locker culture". Our schools are not built for them, and they avoid the management. Also confirms carts or backpacks. -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;

There are no lockers in Denmark. My school bags looked pretty much like this one: https://www.liljen-antik.dk/wp/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/T2165-570.jpg But we had class rooms which (in context) means that we had a home class where almost all lessons were held. Smaller classrooms and seminar rooms generally had tables with chairs around them. The largest lecture, 3 times a week, for the entire freshman class of 350-400 students, involved putting canvas down on a gym floor and setting up folding chairs. The sophomore equivalent of that was held in the Chapel of the 1911 building, with pews. That venue was also used for the Friday Films showings, and for concerts. Once in a while, there would be a wedding on a weekend. /dps -- And the Raiders and the Broncos have life now in the West. The building housing the 360 was the newest on campus and the only one with A/C. After my graduation they put up new building at a rapid pace. The academic ratings fell at about the same pace, A college is not its buildings.

We had recesses and in my time physical education which was a lot of thing with balls and running around. The running around was OK but the balls moved too fast for my slow mind. We also had a "Lunch Hour" not usually 60 minutes. But we were young and our endurance was pretty good. bliss

We had 9 to 13:30 with one recess of half an hour, then lunch at home, then 16 to 18. Physical education one hour per week. Or two, I don't remember. -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;

Healthy bodies perhaps, but healthy minds were not available to all. Exercise is very important to take the edge off of the energy of youth and keep the brain well supplied with blood. bliss

My high school was only half a kilometre from my home, so I could go home for lunch if I was willing to run. -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW

Then my parents unloaded their restaurant on someone and took an apartment in town closer to their new venue. I was able to walk a few blocks past a motorcycle shop with BMWs and Velocettes in the show room. When I walked the same route there was a Indian shop which would soon close. That was one of the reasons that I was hooked on motorcyles because the machines were so beautiful. I rode pillon driver on an old Indian that announced its coming from the jangly noise it produced but I wanted to be driving. And not an old Indian Chief that made so much unneeded noise. My mother had solicited the ride for me from a friend who hung around the new cafe. bliss

I've seen better articles but I can't find one. Brownie bought up all the Indian parts he could when Indian was going under and opened a store in Watervliet to keep the brand going. It was dirty, dingy, and disorganized but he didn't mind giving a kid with no money tips on fixing his Harley. The Harley dealer, even in the '60s, was a boutique catering to middle aged men with disposable income that dressed funny when they rode their bikes. I went there once to buy the shop manual and realized it wasn't my kind of place. Brownie's was. They tried to revive hill climbs and I went to a couple. Some of the riders tried to rework the difficult parts while the old-timers bitched about kids these days. Polaris just sold off Indian. That brand has had more lives than a cat.

Just a few years back when I was able to walk up to California Street via Leavenworth I used to see a newish Indian parked on Bush Street. It was very handsome.
