I surely don't know > where I would have ended up otherwise. I encountered Pascal out of curiosity. When Borland came out with Turbo Pascal for CP/M I wondered 'what can you get for fifty bucks?' It was impressive compared to the BDS C compiler I was using but I never did much with it. My first 'real' language was FORTRAN IV, followed by various assemblers and C. I did download the Lazarus IDE a few weeks ago but I've got too many other projects and never got beyond verifying that is loaded.

That's probably better than what Americans call Dijkstra. We used to have a RS6000 server that went by 'djikstra'. It was named by the same person who named his personal machine 'warfrat'. Great programmer but spelling was optional.

I am charged for the bonds to support the water system which is being reworked with new tunnels across the Central Valley from the dam at Hetch-Hetchy near Yosemite, and all the school bonds in my rent calculations which I get once a year on the anniversary of the current owner taking possession. I used to get charged on the anniversary of my moving into the apartment which was some months earlier but we have rent control in San Francisco and it costs me about $30/yr to register or re-register the apartment. TANSTAAFL is true so if a place has a free lunch the price of the drinks will be higher. bliss

It attacks Turberville's hyperbole by saying that the graduates can, in fact, read their diplomas while acknowledging that they probably can't read much else. This leads to the question of what exactly are the public schools doing with the tax dollars? Or are are 63% of the future voters ineducable?
