I see the kids with backpacks all over. In my day we had bookbags. I can't even find a photo of one. They were like a small duffel bag without all the extra pockets most have, preferably in the school colors. Showing up with a backpack would have gotten you a seat next to the kid who brought his lunch in his red barn lunch box. https://lunchbox.collectionhero.com/view_item.php?id=30630 He was beyond weird but he was also the fastest typist in the school. Today he would be 'on the spectrum' but in the '60s he was someone you tried to avoid. No teasing or harassment and anyone who tried would get corrected by fellow students. He was sort of a protected species.
