I think my paternal grandmother's people may have left Europe because of Bismarck's Kulturkampf. That's just a guess based on the dates on old grave markers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kulturkampf Germany still is about 2/3 Protestant in the north, and 1/3 Catholic in the south among the ones that are at all religious. Somewhere in Goebbel's diaries iirc he mentions the Protestants tended to be SA, the Catholics SS.

There have been cases of officials placing some public money in some fund or whatever that they thought reliable, and then they turn out to be non reliable at all.
