But curiously in the 1940s there were no ballpoint pens or other modern writing tools so the groove held a terrible old pen and the round hole, an inkwell. Pencils were used to practice writing on lined paper that was rather fllimsy and we practiced with pens and used fountain pens at home to write our final drafts. No electronic computers or calculators but I had a mechanical device which was a printed celluloid sleeve wrapped around the shaft of printed pencil and you moved it to check on your multiplicatons. The banks definitely and post offices I believe had such facilities as steel nib pens designed to scratch out requiste numbers on deposis slips. Oh I am so, so, old. bliss

I was once selected as 'soap monitor'. There was a large tin tray containing a slab of carbolic soap. The task was to cut the slab into individual cakes with a cheese-wire and distribute them among the washroom hand basins. -- ^Ï^. Sn!pe, bird-brain. My pet rock Gordon just is.

I don't remember we having any monitor. Ah, maybe... at my first school, when the teacher went out to do something, a student was appointed to take notice of who would speak aloud. That author is Shigeru Mizuki who survived WW II and lost an arm after being drafted into the Japanese Imperial Army.
