Yes. There’s a lot of confusion in this thread. OS APIs may work in one encoding, a language runtime might prefer another, and an application may represent its strings in yet another (or more than one, if it’s dealing with web pages, emails, etc). Hardware makes very little difference beyond the extent to which hardware is bound to particular operating systems (although trying to do UTF-32 on a Z80 would be rather inconvenient). > There is probably an argument for either 32 or 64 bit characters these > days. It’s basically unusuable, almost everyone uses char and UTF-8, because all the existing software works that way and it’s hugely cheaper to adopt UTF-8 and smooth off a few sharp edges than to rewrite everything to use a new character type. There are absolutely use cases for switching temporarily to 32-bit characters but for the most part, it’s just not worth it. Go is similar. Strings are made of bytes, normally encoded as UTF-8, but it’s straightforward to get the 32-bit code points out when you need them. Rust has a 32-bit ‘char’ but the String type is UTF-8 (with a separate type for non-UTF-8 strings). Python takes a different approach. The first one is it's easy to use for a beginner trying simple things. The second one is there are a lot of libraries helping developers. Everything else is just a lot of lies. They pretend it's not strongly typed, but in the real world you will only encounter a lot of issue if you believe that. For the mixing of indentation and parenthesis, it's just ugly and awful to use when trying to debug. Then now you have the encoding issue. Good to know. It's a good learning language to learn programming but not to use in real life. It's designed either for beginners trying to learn how programming works. The internal representation of str really does not make any difference the programmer. For this application the temperature and humidity isn't changing that rapidly, you can only read the sensor every couple of seconds (part of the timing problem) and writing the values to an OLED display isn't time consuming. Adafruit has also developed CircuitPython. It's even easier although the last time I looked it didn't handle interrupts. However for many projects interrupts only add complexity.

However I have an assortment of Pico Ws, Pico 2 Ws, Arduino Unos, and a couple of Arduino Nano 33 Sense BLEs and tend to mix, match, and compare. To further complicate matters I sometimes use Arduino Core on the Picos, MicroPython, CircuitPython, and the RPi C SDK. one justification for a Pico W is I could put up a web interface with the temperature and humidity data. Do I do anything worthwhile with all the hardware? Sadly, no. There are a lot of projects I *could* do but then I ask myself why? Well there is the RPi 3+ robot dog I can use to annoy the cat. The cat really doesn't want to shake hands even though the dog is wagging his tail in a friendly matter. The cat doesn't think much of quadrocopters or little things on wheels either.

Ards have become rather expensive. Not sure why. Even a Pico has pretty much all the interfaces and little devices you need for most anything. Odd ... rarely hear anyone here talk about the Pi-Zero ... kind of a shunk-down Pi2 but a little better for battery projects in some ways. Pico is a microcontroller and thus a bit limited/specific, but the Zero can have somewhat wider uses. The Zero-2WH looks good for a huge number of things. DO like the Mega-2560 Ards though - LOTS of pins and a bunch of other goodies. With the low-power lib you can cut them back to almost zero consumption until some interrupt happens. Sometimes have to tweak lib defs or hardware to work with the various add-on boards, but that's generally not a killer. Their dev environment is 'adequate' and not all cluttered-up with shit you'll never use. My last field project had two stacked add-on boards ... one to charge LiPo batteries from solar and the other a custom board to handle various devices. There IS a 'hardened' version of the 2560 you can still buy, the "RuggedDurino" ... intended for 'schools'. Has voltage/current clamps on all the pins. Might also be very useful for 'industrial' or some 'field' applications where transient EMP from lightning may be an issue. USED to have a nice serial PIC programmer with a one-size-fits-all ZIF socket. Alas mChip does not support those (or some of the chips) anymore. Instead you need more complex (read EXPENSIVE) and less-general solutions now. Such a pity. Now WHAT to do with my stock of 16c84 JWs ??? :-)

The IDE isn't bad although 2.0 wasn't quite as improved as I'd hoped for. It does tend to spawn new instances of itself. Lately I've been using arduino-cli with vim as the editor. https://forum.arduino.cc/t/arduino-and-vim-no-ide-required/882004 The vim-arduino package works well. I use minicom for the serial interface. I haven't needed the serial plotter option. I didn't bother with the bundled examples. There are Arduinos that target industrial applications but they are quite expensive. The new Uno Q is bringing some of that to the hobbyist market. From what I've read so far it's awkward. I've got an old Atmel development board that I keep thinking I should try to get working. AVR Studio became Microchip Studio and runs on the dreaded Win11 interface. I got a feeling it would be easier to build a programmer with a Pico W.

I did, eventually. There are a couple of C versions and at least one PIO version. I didn't try the PIO but it might work better than the bit banging. It came with a Sunfounder parts kit. Adafruit, SparkFun and some of the others have dropped the DHT11. It always had accuracy problems plus the funky 1 pin interface. The DHT20 and SHT40 are I2C and more accurate. https://toptechboy.com/measure-temperature-and-humidity-on-the-raspberry- pi-pico-w/ I'd originally followed that tutorial. Simple and it works. Trying to replicate it with the C SDK, not so simple and a lot of dead ends. I have the Raspberry Pi Pico extension installed in VS Code and if you select new C/C++ project you can select from examples in the dialog. Selecting 'dht' was off to a bad start.

That includes 'system' stuff, client/server stuff, video/gui stuff ... almost anything you could want that doesn't include a giant box full of NVidia chips - but it'll help you interface with that too. Most everything I did in the past decade was first prototyped using Python. If that was good enough then it was good enough ... otherwise I'd take the info/structure and move it to 'C' or Pascal. Python strings ... quoted defs are 'immutable', but you can still do all the usual comparisons and searching junk. Never a real problem. The most annoying 'string' thing are "binary" strings, sometimes returned by systems work. Depending on future uses you may have to convert them to "real" strings. If you're doing client/server EXPECT those kinds of strings - to be sent and/or received. Yea yea ... it's "interpreted" ... but the interpreter is just sequencing functions writ in 'C' by and large. There are some 'compilers' ... some better than others. Python essentially borrowed ideas from FORTRAN, BASIC and Algol/Pascal. It's readable, functional, USUALLY "fast enough" and easy to develop/debug.
