I did, eventually. There are a couple of C versions and at least one PIO version. I didn't try the PIO but it might work better than the bit banging. It came with a Sunfounder parts kit. Adafruit, SparkFun and some of the others have dropped the DHT11. It always had accuracy problems plus the funky 1 pin interface. The DHT20 and SHT40 are I2C and more accurate. https://toptechboy.com/measure-temperature-and-humidity-on-the-raspberry- pi-pico-w/ I'd originally followed that tutorial. Simple and it works. Trying to replicate it with the C SDK, not so simple and a lot of dead ends. I have the Raspberry Pi Pico extension installed in VS Code and if you select new C/C++ project you can select from examples in the dialog. Selecting 'dht' was off to a bad start.

That includes 'system' stuff, client/server stuff, video/gui stuff ... almost anything you could want that doesn't include a giant box full of NVidia chips - but it'll help you interface with that too. Most everything I did in the past decade was first prototyped using Python. If that was good enough then it was good enough ... otherwise I'd take the info/structure and move it to 'C' or Pascal. Python strings ... quoted defs are 'immutable', but you can still do all the usual comparisons and searching junk. Never a real problem. The most annoying 'string' thing are "binary" strings, sometimes returned by systems work. Depending on future uses you may have to convert them to "real" strings. If you're doing client/server EXPECT those kinds of strings - to be sent and/or received. Yea yea ... it's "interpreted" ... but the interpreter is just sequencing functions writ in 'C' by and large. There are some 'compilers' ... some better than others. Python essentially borrowed ideas from FORTRAN, BASIC and Algol/Pascal. It's readable, functional, USUALLY "fast enough" and easy to develop/debug.

Maybe I’m unusual, but I make little use of Python packages that are not
available with the distro. So distro package version management is good
enough for me.

Not much fun in THAT !!! :-) Me, I use 'nano' as much as possible. Larger, complex, programs ... sometimes I have to use IDLE or Geany because they can make guide-lines showing indentation levels. Once that's fixed, back to 'nano' :-)

Any decent programming editor will have a facility for selecting a group of lines and adding/removing the appropriate commenting characters. (If your editor doesn't have that, then by definition it's not decent. :-)

Well ...... reflex ........ :-) Now most of my code lines have a "# WhatThisIs" comment at the end. I like to micro-document so I can remember what my own fuckin' code does a few years down the line. AMAZING how quickly the 'why' vanishes from the mind :-) Probably 50% of the text in my code - doesn't matter which lang - is 'comments'. ANYway ... you CAN easily do block commenting in Python ... P3 anyway, not so sure about P2 because I never used it. IF there's a P4 ... they really SHOULD accept "/*" as a start-comment.

I had a tendency to clone similar projects and inherit some code that I could tweak so the final executable did one thing well. We had a couple of nightmares that originally did one thing well but for the next project the programmer said 'That's close to what I need. A few configuration values here and there and it will work.' The next time around it got some more configuration values to do something else. I have a Swiss Army knife I found; it's in the junk drawer.

Did a recent little app where you needed to inc by two ... and the comment explained why. Oh, I usually write "i=i+2". It's a bit more clear and becomes the same code anyway. += is more a 'C' thing.
