Oh yes, IIRC (I'm not a bible historian, duh) the original texts were written
mostly in Aramaic, Greek and Latin over quite a span of time and places (and
thus social and cultural contexts).

And from what I've read, it's a mix of:
- translators having a reasonable grip on the languages, but missing an
understanding of the cultural & social context the original text
was written in and therefore mistranslating without being aware
of it
- translators very much having their own ideas (usually influenced by
their own cultural and historical context) and coloring their
"translations" with them
Correctly translating historical texts requires a lot more than "Hey,
I know that language!". Social and cultural contexts change over time
and distance and languages change too.

This thread got me interested enough to look up "Septuagint" on Wikipedia. The story was that one of the Ptolomies gathered 72 Jewish scholars in Alexandria to translate the Talmud into Greek for his library, but apparently this is not true, but however it was done, there was a Greek translation.

TaNaKh (Torah, chronicles, and prophets), rather than the Talmud.
The myth was that all of the scholars produced the same translation (i.e., a
miracle happened).
The Jewish writer David Berg opined that if 70 Jewish scholars did the work,
there would be 140 versions...

Koine Greek was the lingua franca, and many spoke Aramaic. Having a Greek translation was handy when many people no longer could speak or read Hebrew.

Can't have that. The 'Apocrypha' also was questionable. Second Maccabees suggests prayers for the dead are effective. Can't have that either.

Oh, wrong on so many planes.
The Christian part of "the Bible" (which in English subsumes both Hebrew and
Aramaic texts inherited from the Jews, and Greek originals written beginning
c. 70CE about an Aramaic speaking individual from Judaea, using stories
borrowed from various West Asian inspired "mystery" religions) was *translated*
into Latin in the 4th Century CE *because that was the language of the populace
of western Europe*.
This translation was made not to *obscure* but to *illuminate* the scriptures
for people who could not read the original Greek.

The reason is likely simpler than that. Most books of the Bible are very old, predating modern languages. So it could only have been originally written down using a written language that existed at the time of that writing. At the time, the choices might have been Latin and/or Greek as languages, and given the impact the Romans had on the proto religion that came to be known as Christanity, and the Romans subsequent embrace of the same, having the bible books written in (or translated into -- the more likely possibility) Latin because of the Roman empire embrace of Christanity is much more likely the reason than the "elites" wanting to be sure the mere peasants could not read it. Of course, once Christanity spread across Europe, the elites maintaining their elite status by keeping the bible in a language only spoken by the "properly educated highbrows" clearly is why it remained untranslated to other languages for so long.

Originally in Aramaic and Hebrew. Not Latin. And IIRC translated first into Greek. And finally into the King James English version which is taken as The One True Word Of God by an awful lot of people. -- “The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools.” Herbert Spencer

I have a catholic bible in 6 thick tomes from about 1850 which has one column in latin, taken from the vulgata, and another column in Spanish. Then the bottom half are foot notes. -- Cheers, Carlos. The Douay-Rheims is a translation of the Vulgate. Pius XII suggested a new translation from the Hebrew and Greek that resulted in the Jerusalem Bible, which is the one I have. The first version was in French but that spurred an English translation. The editors of the New Jerusalem Bible thought the Jerusalem Bible was more a translation from French than the original sources and tried again. Then there was the Revised New Jerusalem Bible that was supposed to be more literal but had gender inclusive language. Will the real bible please stand up?

I think it predates version control. Definitely predates Linux. It is amazing to me how far off-topic this group gets. Have you considered taking it to misc.misc?
