Once you have the preview area set up, you can just put in picture after picture and hit the scan in xsane. You can tell it what the save name is and it will automatically add increasing numbers. If you want you do not have to even look at the output but save automatically. Size?--of course they are large.24 bit colour meand 3 bytes per pixel. 1200dpi means 80MB per 4x6 picture and that is minimum to capture the full details on the picture. jpeg means you loose resolution due to fuzzy compression, so png might reduce that to 20MB/picture. Is that too huge for you? Then why are you scanning them in?
