In the US, 'progressive' is mostly identical with Democrat.  The last 
'Progressive Party' was Wallace's creation and lasted about eight years. 
That one really was a haven for Communists that were left without a home 
after FDR.

'Liberal', 'left', 'progressive', and so forth have all the semantic value 
of 'fascist', 'racist', or 'nazi' these days. The Democrats go through 
this every now and then.

They keep drifting further left led by the so-called elites that look down 
their noses at the 'basket of deplorables' and then wonder why the 
deplorables hate them so much. 

The deplorables also start to wonder why the Republicans seem to be 
ineffective in stopping the leftward drift.
