Having read Eric's reply, I have to say that a majority of my maintenance time on other people's code is straight defect fixing, not enhancements. For my part I can live with ugly if it's comprehensible and correct. And more often than I'd like I've had to take elegant, beautiful code written for way-above-average coders by some guy who wasn't thinking about the team, and rewrite it to be somewhat uglier just so more people could understand it and maintain it.
