That's not it, exactly: it's that, in general, state-smartness makes programs harder to understand, and that state-smart words are hard to use as factors. There are, I admit, some exceptions to this rule. On the other hand, I'm sure you can name cases where state-smartness really does help; if someone put a gun to my head, I probably could too. You must, surely, have had hot-shot programmers who liked to define kewl syntaxes with state-smart words that you later ripped out, making the resulting program clearer, but less cute? It may be that I am a bit too pure, a bit too much of an idealist. Very well, I will admit to that. But I suspect that "Don't write state-smart words" will remain good advice, just like "don't GOTO". A programmer sometimes will ignore such advice, with good reason. Andrew.
