Yes, many of the primitives have little to do with speed and more to
do with being able to do things which are easier in C. E.g., there's
a primitive NEWLINE which produces a string constant (for a newline).
This could be done in Forth, but then we would have to transfer
knowledge about the OS used (and its newline convention) into the
image. Which was blissfully ignorant of that when NEWLINE was
introduced; hmm, nowadays we have the environmental query OS-CLASS
(which is in the image), so we might turn NEWLINE from a primitive to
a Forth word.
In any case, when you look at benchmark data, only half of the 300
primitives are used in any particular benchmark run at all, and
relatively few are used in a frequency that makes them relevant for
performance. Of course, for different benchmarks the
performance-relevant primitives might vary.
