Sounds like your "backup" wasn't as extensive as you thought. I've had little trouble transferring $HOME between distros, although I don't keep all that much. -- firefox / tbird (.mozilla ) -- .gnupg -- .ssh Docu and everything else are pulled over when I realize I need something -- no point in "wasting" the bandwidth moving docs from 4 years ago that I'm never gonna touch again. > > Then, Firefox helpfully starts you out with a "fresh" profile, which > takes a while to reconfigure (I think they want you to use their > Firefox sync service, which in truth would've saved me some hassle - > I've begun using it now - but introduces security questions of its > own). While I admittedly use that to keep stuff between the phone and the PC sync'd up; I don't need to use it to restore PC settings on reinstall. It's possible the .mozilla/firefox/default.whatever profile has changed names, or that you created your own non-default profile to use. > [...] > I remember in the days of fluxbox, mutt, and sylpheed you could very > easily backup $HOME to a USB key, wipe your Linux install, and then > reinstall $HOME from your USB key. Works for me .. although I use XFCE for the most part. > Those days seem to be well and over. Too bad! I've yet to run into actual _problems_ ; except for upgrading between 17.x and 18.0; at which I had some issues with systemd and promptly reformatted back to 17 until I could do further research and find something that hadn't drunk the koolaid yet. -- |_|O|_| Registered Linux user #585947 |_|_|O| Github: https://github.com/dpurgert |O|O|O| PGP: 05CA 9A50 3F2E 1335 4DC5 4AEE 8E11 DDF3 1279 A281
